I quit smoking...again. (pg. 2)

6-7 smokes a day is still quite a bit, imo.

I've smoked regularly but never heavily since I was 16.
I had 6 month periods where I would quit entirely though.

I am in one of those periods right now. Haven't bought a pack since September and haven't had a cigarette since Christmas (even then, it was ONE and I had polished off an entire bottle of wine)

I still get cravings often. Especially after eating a heavy meal, . Cravings then are stronger than when drinking, for me.

I usually stifle a craving with two pieces of Dentyne Ice. I have become obsessed with it. Last December, before an exam, I was super nervous and I had no gum and I started flipping the out asking random people for gum. I honestly started panicking :stongue:

I don't think I ever *really* craved cigs. I was just unaware of the habitual aspect of what I was doing. Once I broke that, I noticed I never really thought about doing it, or wanted to do it. The times I actually do are few and far between. And even then I can rationalize my way out of it.

I tried starting smoking once when I was 7, but failed so haven't bothered since. :(

oh i agree, which is why i needed to quit smoking. my chest would sometimes hurt and i woke up nearly every day with my throat hurting. slowly over the years of smoking i did consciously cut back on some bad habits. like the cig when you first wake up. after eating a meal, id make myself wait a couple mins before i rushed outside to smoke. i used to like a cig right before i had an exam to calm me down, but if i did it RIGHT before the exam id come in a little jittery and have to wait 5 mins to really calm down before i could focus properly, so i cut back on that too.

i guess i got a little lucky with the quitting thing though. i had never really tried before, like i had gone 3-4 days without a cig before but never really took quitting seriously. then i got my wisdom teeth taken out and couldnt smoke for a week. im sure i could of and it would of been fine, but i just didnt wanna risk dry socket i think its called. so i went a week, and at that point i decided, if ive already gone through this crap for a week why would i want to smoke again and have to redo this hellish week? it wasnt any easier id say for the first 2 months, but now i dont really even think about it. well i was out with a buddy at a bar recently and i had quite a bit to drink and thought to myself, "wow a cig would be so nice right now." but the following thought was "yea but i dont really need it, so it."

anyway... my whole point is... good luck and dont put too much pressure on yourself. just try and do it. nice, simple, relaxed. and like i said what helped me with was the thought of having to redo those first couple of days without a smoke. because to me, thats the hardest part.

I think the released a study on genetic mutations and found that roughly 15 cigarettes causes one irreversible genetic error in your cells. They said of course a majority of your cells DNA is not code for your lung cells or any of the other code that is capable of causing cancerous cell growth, so its not that big a deal though, at least statistically.

Still pretty crazy.

Wow, awesome advert.

I stopped smoking on Christmas eve. I started about 18 months ago, with 2 or 3 a week when I got stressed. This quickly became 2-3 a day then up to about 10 a day before Christmas...I had signed up to the gym in Sept with a group of friends but was never going because I knew I was smoking more and more and didn't want to get out of breath in front of them.

I am so glad I stopped, there are times when I wish I could smoke again but the craving only lasts about 10 seconds now. When I got drunk of my ass about a month ago I really wanted a smoke, but felt so happy with myself that I knew even when wasted I was able to say no.

So yeah, over a month smoke free, started dieting last week and start back at they gym on monday when I get some gym shoes....and I feel pretty great about it all :)

Yes that's true...and I read somewhere that a most lung cancers have nothing to do with cigarettes, and there's a big issue with the stigma/victim blaming that people with lung cancer get, because everyone links it with smoking when it isnt' the case most times.

Haha yeah I have no issue with it. I've quit before and it wasn't really hard for me then, either. It's already been 5 days, and I didn't even think about it the first few days.

I've quit before then picked it back up. I've been smoking for 9 years now and really want to stop. its such a nasty habbit a lot of my friends smoke so its hard to not light up. Yes the biggest test for you will be when you pick up a drink. Smoking and drinking went hand in hand for me, drugs and cigs went hand in hand too. if you never actually had 'cravings' then thats a good thing, bc i get crazy cravings when i stop. if i stop i get headaches and i feel like . get through the first week and you should be ok. its mad hard though i give you props for quiting. I'm not sure how much cigs cost in your area but in NYC i pay around $9.50 for Newports which is rediculous i know. so think of quiting as a money saver also.. good luck.
