That's probably the reason then.
There are so so so so many theories on what dreams are, but I still hold to the most prevalent theory from when I was studying Psych.
Basically, when you're asleep, your brain is uncontrolled (you're unconscious). Your brain is still running though, or you would die. The brain is firing off in all kinds of directions, and hitting all kinds of areas of the brain: Memory - Vision, sound, touch, taste, whatever.
While this happens, the rest of your brain is just doing what it's built for. Specifically, to take large amounts of stimulus and put it together into a meaningful flow. To make sense of it. A story, if you like. |
In layman's terms, I believe that dreams are the brain "doing filing" at the end of the day and sorting out everything that happened to you, hence why you often feel clear-headed or have sudden unexplained answers in the middle of the night or when you wake in the morning.
My girlfriend and I often discuss our dreams and try to interpret them. Not any mystical about predicting the future or anything though. Usually we just come up with fairly obvious answers we knew sub-conciously all along.
For example, a few weeks after I quit my job last year, I had a dream I was in a relay race with a few members from the company. I was the star runner and they were relying on me to win. I went to the toilet just before the race because I was nervous and ended up missing the event. However, they won comfortably anyway. I interpret this as my own guilt about leaving my work mates struggling with a big work load, but then realising that they're going to be fine without me. Consciously I hadn't fully understood this, but when I woke up from the dream it was clear. |

I interpret it as you have an entitlement complex to poo whenever you like. |

Yes! I totally dream of this every once in a while.
Funny thing is, I asked my dentist recently if she's ever heard of anyone having these and she said no. I think it's interesting now that other people have this dream with some degree of frequency. |

I wonder what my brain is filing when I have abstract and visceral nightmares. |

Unresolved issues in your past? I don't know, because I don't know you.
Do you really think the 'brain filing' idea is far-fetched, or are you just in the mood to play with me? |

I'm not arguing with you as such. Nou saying he hasn't had a nightmare in ages was my main prompt, because I've had two nightmares in the last three nights.
With that said, this idea of "filing" seems like nonsense to me. I think it's more likely that dreams are just thought processes in an altered state of mind. Granted, we usually think about recent events, but we do that when we're awake too. |

You just agreed with me but in different words. Filing = thought processes or rumination of recent events. |
