| texting has it's random good occasions; but i agree with a few on here that it has ruined communication and can be misinterpreted. |

On the dating scene it will make you look like a wuss - calling shows interest.

Agreed. Gotta speak with confidence.

In addition we're an increasingly impersonal society, rendering us anxious, impatient, suspicious and peevish. We are socially inept creatures. |
Sadly. |

In my experience a girl texting you means:
"You're kind of cute but I want to keep my distance becaus I'm not comfortable yet and I wanna be impersonal and 'have my cake and eat it too.'"
Well if you wanna keep your options open, so do I. Kindly excuse me for not replying to your texts.
For some reason, replying to a female text always leads to disaster. |

I texted/IM'ed with my woman almost exclusively when we were dating - nowadays we live together. Still texting. |

I think I know where you're coming from lol
It turns into this dumb game of one-upping each other by not replying to each other's messages - totally defeating the purpose in the process. |

I prefer texting over phone usage, but I have known a number of girls that are far more comfortable talking than texting (even some that down right HATE being texted).
I think this just goes to show its dependent on the person, but maybe the averages are skewed to one sex over another.
In the end who cares. :p
Actually I'm pretty sure I lost a good friend because I refused to call her haha... I'd just text and email. Mainly cause when I'd call her she'd just blab and I'd hardly get a word in edgewise. Texts work so much better for getting a point across with little to no BS in between. Then again all bitches like that amirite? |

and to extend that point, I really only hate calling cellphones.
If you call a house phone, you know where that person is, you know that you probably aren't interrupting much if you do call them, unless its during lunch, dinner, or other times (such as sleeping, or getting ready in the morning).
A cell phone you never know if you are interrupting someone. I feel really anxious that I might be rudely interrupting them doing something important. |

| I have texting disabled. If it's not important enough to call, I don't care. |

My questions:
- for the female TA's: Why do women use text messages to communicate with guys, rather than actually call them?
- for people in relationships: Do you communicate with your significant others via text messages, or do you actually dial the number and call them, when you want to get in touch?
- for everyone who's dating: Do you sometimes get the feeling that text messages are a polite way of keeping you at arm's length? Isn't texting is a little disrespectful when the person could have called you? |
I text to everyone, including my BF.
Reasons:
- it's convenient... I can do it when I am in class, or in the office. Texting is more discrete and more likely not to get me into trouble.
- it's cheaper. I can do unlimited texts to anyone at any time, even long distance. As such, I would rather send a text than pay the 25 cents a minute to call someone to say something I could say in 1 text.
- I don't like talking on the phone. I don't know why, but I just don't. I would rather communicate in text or in person rather than talk on the phone.

Texting for more than 2 texts or so is stupid. |
Agreed. If what I need to say is more than even 1 text worth, I will usually just call, unless I know the person is at work/in school.
I think the assumption that she is trying to keep you at a distance is more than likely wrong and I wouldn't find it offensive. |

Texting is the most romantic form of communication.
With IM it's too easy to reply (and you have to basically) and you aren't at all encouraged to write things of decent length.
And with calling you have to reply straight away and things are said one word at a time rather then read together and read multiple times.
So, I prefer it sometimes depending on what mood I'm in. I mean it's the best way to say goodnight if you aren't up for a 5 minute convo on the phone. |
