It's not just him, it's for others too. People often search forums and google for topics in their life that bother them, and with a member base of 90K+ (ok, around 12K real, actual, non-alts), there's quite a decent chance that someone might find these discussions useful. |

life is and always has been about pain, stress, and discomfort. today you stress about your bills, decades ago people stressed about nuclear winter, hundreds of years ago people stressed about infectious disease, thousands of years ago people stressed about lions eating them alive. our lives are no more stressful today than they were then, but somewhere along the line we've become less independent, less adaptable, less capable as individuals to affect our own circumstances. what has transpired is a systematic deconstruction of the individual's mental, social, and physical health through the multitude of cultural banes conditioned into modern society as norms.
you're right that diet and exercise alone make an incomplete picture, but what's missing isn't psychiatric medicine, it's knowledge. there are proven techniques on how to manage and cope with stressors big and small by living mindfully of how you maintain your overall health. likely the stress in your life is a physiological response to a false sense of emergency and by learning to control your stress response, you can hone the knowledge it takes to manage the stress that arises under a healthy lifestyle that includes rigorous diet and exercise.

not victim-blaming, self-reliance and self-empowerment. i recognize access to healthy food, exercise and the knowledge needed to properly cope with stress aren't equally accessible to people of different socioeconomic classes, but that is not an excuse to steer these people away from proper treatment, which should always begin with the most simple, basic and effective methods first. how are drugs and therapy going to help someone who is sedentary, malnourished, socially isolated, and oblivious to the impact of that lifestyle on his mood? before referring anyone to professionals, people should be given the tools to help themselves first. the tools are these fundamentals that so many people in this country are totally ignorant of. furthermore, what a prescription drug does to one's psyche is places an external locus of control over their circumstances, telling him he is incapable of overcoming such obstacles on his own and shouldn't even bother trying. |
