Does this mean you don't understand cultural differences? |
No, I work for US companies for 10 years, have German, Belgium and US relatives, live 10 km for German and Belgium border. I would be the one living underneath a rock if I didn't notice those differences, especially in Holland.
But I saw TOP GEAR in the US last year. That made me think of this. You should watch that episode, really funny :) |

I don't think it has as much to do with culture as you think.
Americans love that terrible electropop crap like Kesha and Lady Gaga, yet they wouldn't listen to straight-up electro. |
It has everything to do with culture. America, for the most part, has never really experienced the type of electronic music boom that Europe has. It has increased in popularity, and we're seeing acts like the ones you mentioned utilizing the style and flavor of electronic music, but it just hasn't had the history here. |

I dunno out here in LA I meet a lot of people who are at least familiar with some dance music beyond old pop trance.
I don't have a whole lot of friends who don't listen to dance music at all, but the subject usually never comes up like that anyway because I listen to lots of other music. The only time I usually have to answer the question specifically is when people ask me what I DJ. |

You're right. It also took long before people started to realise there is a substitute for cubic inch.
Here is the first part of that Top Gear episode. Differces between UK and US all over it:

Haha I get that sometimes too.
I mean wtf are you supposed to look like? Some guido? Most producers and DJ's look like pencil geeks too. |

I have some pretty cultured friends. Two of my closest friends love EDM, we go to shows/afterhours together all the time. My other friends are just flat out really open to new music, I can show them anything that I think is 'good' music, and while they might not like it much they can admit that well written.
My closest friend has probably been one of my biggest music influences, he doesn't listen to EDM but still comes to check out DJ sets, and I think it's finally growing on him.. the 4/4 bass drum I mean. I realized thats the sticking point to most people is getting over the uhhh-tsss-uhhh-tsss and paying attention to the actual sounds, structures, basslines, etc..
I dunno, everyone who I care about enough to talk about it knows what I listen to, and when a stranger asks I don't shy away. Maybe it's cuz Montreal's a bit more 'cultured' then most of North America? the EDM scene here is pretty big. Doesn't mean people here know what the difference between house, trance, and techno is, but thats understandable.
I've always wanted to buy this shirt, think it's hillarious.

Yeah, depending. I mean the gap between Nebraska and Los Angeles is probably far larger than that between London and Los Angeles, for sure. |
