I hate statements like this. How the can you possibly know people are becoming more superficial? |

I don't really know, it is my impression.
People don't just sit and listen to music anymore, they are distracted by irrelevant stimuli all the time. Even when they say they care about the music, they mostly listen to mp3s on their computers (while multitasking) or on their IPods (on their way to work). Piracy still isn't exactly uncommon, and when people don't pay for stuff, they usually don't give a about it. Sometimes, folks don't even listen to what they downloaded. They aren't willing to make an effort and actually pay their full attention to the music; hell, to anything.
Of course, your experience may be different, I'm just describing what I see in my environment. |

If I'm interested in something, I'm ing interested in it. Music, films, books, whatever. There's no interest in my life that I digest in the role of a passive, mindless consumer. | List the last 5 movies you've seen in the theater and the last 5 books you've read, and I'll tell you why that statement is largely subjective. |

I doubt that. What you listen to, read or watch don't matter. I have no problem with someone listening to Lady Gaga or Timbaland if that's what they are actually interested in. The whole point is how and why you appreciate something. |

I think "distracted" is a better adjective for this than "superficial." Although I don't know if people really used to be able to concentrate better, or just had different distractions.

There's a yearly massive up in Montreal next month, I asked a guy from work who parties, if he's ever been.. he told me, word for word:
"I went once, but I don't really pop pills.. you gotta be high to listen to that repetitive , its like.. straight beats no singing or rapping, for hours and hours. It's not my thing."
I told him that you grow to like it an appreciate it, and he told me "I guess."
He plays video games.. he's an obsessive gamer, he took 2 days off work when Modern Warfare 2 came out. That's his thing, I have a PS3 and play occasionally, but I can't play for hours on end. He likes video games, I like music. People have different priorities, thats why people shouldn't push their opinions on people just cuz they don't like EDM or care. |

I used to be an obsessive gamer too. Throughout my high school years I probably played close to 1500 hours of Call of Duty 1 and 2 online with people I knew.
What a waste of time that was now looking back. If I took the time to do something constructive... |

First date with my (current) girlfriend, I mentioned I liked House and she thought I was talking about the TV show :P
Though, when I first started getting into EDM (10+ years ago), most people had no idea what I was talking about. Nowadays, a lot more people are familiar with house, electro, trance, techno, etc. and some actually like it. I live in the shadow of NYC, so that may have something to do with it, I'd imagine many people from more remote parts of America still have no idea about EDM. |

I usually see the silent face questioning itself what did he/she just heard. Usually I tell the people that I like mostly the style ambient and, since most of them haven't heard it, I play some track, usually very ear friendly without being way too deep, and they start to like it.
But when starting a discussion about Goa/Psy trance or whatever, its another, different story... |

Here's an anecdote related to the thread. Last summer, I invited the guy I was dating and his toddler daughter to the Sundae party in Philly. It's a family-friendly outdoor dance party and I thought it would give him a chance to do something different than taking his daughter to the same park every day. Plus the music is good and accessible to all audiences. And it does appeal to little kids, as evidenced by 3 year olds break dancing (or trying to).
He declined my request and said he'd rather take his daughter to the usual playground. We had a long discussion about the reasons that he didn't want to come. There was no really good excuse not to go and finally he blurted out:
"I don't like the things that you do."
I paused and reflected on what he said and broke up with him at that very moment. I didn't dump him b/c he was indifferent to dance music, but he didn't trust that I liked something worthwhile. What he was saying that he didn't like ME in the respect that he didn't like anything I was interested in. What a douchebag.
(I admit I was at my breaking point when I dumped him. His obsession with controlling his ex was creepy). |

all you talk about with your friends is music? :stongue: i think that's a bit socially handicapped  |
It's not the ONLY thing but it definitely is one of the MAIN things. I love music more than almost anything else which is why it comes up in conversation for me quite frequently. Their lack of interest in one of my favorite subjects just pretty much turned me off from wanting to share anything else with them.
It's ok tho, honestly I can't really say I miss any of them. Ironically enough I have more friends now than I did at that part in my life so it's a win/win for me. |

It is actual aversion for a lot of Americans. For them, EDM is devoid of talent. Rock musicians have to play an instrument or sing, and rappers at least have to come up with lyrics and lay them down to a beat, which takes some skill to do well. But what do dance music "artists" do? Press a few buttons while hopped up on pills?
