Seriously, finding the time to make music is getting rather difficult. Especially during the week doing the whole nine til five thingy, it leaves me with only the weekend and then having a partner makes it even tougher, as well she expects time too. I never took production seriously until over a year ago even though i had been at it off and on for several years. I mean now i am trying to cram so much in learning the tech side of things as well as coming up with something worth while to listen too,
How do you guys cope with the demands?
Set goals, work out a plan, or just do it when you can... |

My thought process is make better more technical tracks with more creative arrangements and take as much time as needed. If you make superior music it doesn't matter when you get it done; it oonly matters that is does get done eventually. |

Have exactly the same problem as you - Learning Vs Gilfriend its an ongoing battle for the last few months. At the moment I have a schedule I try to follow - Monday's- keyboard practice, Wednesday's - DJ practice act... but it is hard to follow at times. I don’t think there is an easy way to free up time.
Maybe do a part-time production course that have evening and weekend classes I did one a few months back and also hired their DJ booth a few times I seemed to work fine but it costs a lot.
Good luck let me know if you have any other ideas. |

This is what I do.
Same situation as you with the added bonus of a small child and two new businesses to run.
The most important skill i've learned in the last six months is knowing when to bin a project i'm not happy with and move on. It usually happens within the first hour now! |

You breeders just need to go gay with a music production partner.
(I'm not gay).
I have a 9-5 too and a soon-to-be wife, but I don't find myself short on free time. The shortest amount of free time I ever had was while I was a full-time computer science major and still working 20 hours /per week all through my last year in college. Since getting a 9-5, I find myself with tons of free time. Suck it up and make the time! |

also a 9-5'er. my daily schd (which is mapped out in google calendar and sync'd to my nexus one typically looks like)
7am - rise & shine you handsome man
8am - curse about having a day job
9am - at the day job (cursing while mumbling)
...
...
...
5pm - leave the day job singing
6pm - studio (outside of my house and helps drastically!)
...
...
8pm - caramelo & sprite
...
..
11pm - home :)
i make sure i spend at least 1 night a week doing something fun with the gf. Thankfully she's busier than I so it works out. I'm still able to complete about 5-6 tracks a mo |

This I totaly relate to. I haven't touched my keyboard in about a month, it's driving me nuts..
Got the GF, 9-5 job, own a house so have to do maintenance.. I think the big problem is a love of video games, that kinda sucks out all my spare time. Sigh...
Must try to reignite my motivation. |

The ultimate time waster. Just stay away from WoW. The rest aren't terrible compared to WoW. |

Mate! i know exactly what you mean.
i work 9 - 6 in the city.. so i have to leave 45 mins before i start and it takes that long to get home.. and i got football and gym on most mornings/nights so weeks are a write off too.
i mamanged to now get off at 1pm on fridays so i can use friday arvos n nights to do music and then saturday days. sometimes nights and sundays so my whole weekends are taken up with production however ive met this new girl who ive been seeing for a little bit so saturday nights n sundays are slowly becoming unproductionanble (its a word trust me :D )
i generally manage by setting out a day and a night JUST for production at least once a weekend and ive stopped drinking. this my friend makes ALL the difference. my mind is clearer and i can make a song SO much quicker.
i had to finish the last mix of one of my tracks for a label and i basically made the whole song last friday fixed it up a little on saturday and then if i give it a few more hours it will be done.
i credit this to no drinking.
when i was drinking it took my double the time maybe even triple.
but now - SO much better haha.
i rekon just tell the mrs that one night a weekend is JUST for production and music. then the rest if all yours.
thats what i do ;)
thats my story. ha |
