Nah, I heard its buggy as hell and it sucks.
I like the ArmA/VBS series because you can basically build whatever you want in them, they are giant sandboxes.
Plus I might get paid to work on one of them so... :D Vested interest. :p

you of all people should know better than to play a game developed by the government :p

Ya, VBS2 shows that private industry can do better...
Well to be fair AA3 was developed by a private firm too... :p It just plain sucks, enough that the whole development team was sacked just before release because it was so buggy. :haha:

can someone give me a play by play of what exactly was going on there? i heard a bunch of weird and i don't quite understand the situation
back on topic, there's something about giving away armed forces training video games for free that irks me. sure, free games are awesome but i can't stop seeing a somewhat subliminal motivation behind it. also, this thread has totally got me being a wiki-freak reading about the a-10 and other aircraft

British soldiers more than likely called for Close Air Support (CAS) from a US A-10. Either the CAS was called on enemy very close to them, they got the grid reference wrong, or the A-10 pilot mistook them for the target.
The A-10 opened up for whatever reason close to them with its 30mm cannon, which fires a mix of high explosive incendiary and armor piercing rounds. You can hear the rounds hitting around them, then that weird sound in the background is the actual sound of the A-10 firing its gun (the droning monster like sound).
They seem excited at first, then the second burst lands right in front of them and they get the out.
There is an extended video of this, everyone luckily turns out fine. :p
*edit*
Also of course there is an ulterior motive to giving away these games. On the other hand, these games probably won't inspire most people like AA3 does. Most of the stuff in these games is pretty humdrum compared to the run and gun style of AA3. Also you die less in VBS2, but when you die its probably a lot more like how you would in real life (random VBIED or IED, mortar round randomly lands on you, etc).

at least its upfront and honest. unlike say, the defence department and their purse puppet strings with hollywood, but only if they get to vet the script first

it's funny how every country has a Ministry of Defence, while at least a few countries should've had the Ministry of Sudden Offense and Occupation
