I buy and wear clothes because I desire to or enjoy wearing them, not to follow a cult, "be cool", or attempt to emulate something I'm not. |
Who choices to wear a scarf? |

Why are you so concerned about what other people think about hipsters? Does it hit too close to home? |
why are you so concerned about how concerned you think other people are about hipsters? :conf:

| Eh, there is some homophobia mixed in, but you can hardly reduce all of the anti-hipster sentiment to that. |

i'm not.
there are many phobias in there. i believe that a lot of these phobias are a the ugly heads of chauvinism of all sorts. primarily it is an expression of hatred and fear of anything that transgresses masculine gender norms.
i think we can all agree that the appropriation of the keffiyeh is terrible though |

I think part of it is a generational thing, and part of it just a backlash against whatever urban youth are doing. Also throw in a tiny bit of jealousy, maybe.
Yuppies got much the same treatment in popular sentiment, hehe.

See my above edit.
I think a lot of this is lashing out at fashion consciousness, which is seen as threatening to masculine gender norms.
What do people dislike about hipsters? Most of the comments are about they way they look. Typically people cite skinny jeans, scarves, skinny bodies, outrageous fashion statements, etc. All things that macho men are terribly afraid of for fear of compromising their masculinity. |

Yeah, there is that, but I have also seen lots of comments about ideology and activism and music, for example. I don't think those are connected to homophobia in any way, apart from a few cases of metal heads slipping into middle age and lamenting the wussy new youth.
