So far, I have had no reason to hate hipsters. A lot of them work in the service industry and usually are nice to me. They throw cheap parties. A lot of them ride bikes, which makes for less cars. A lot of them do volunteer work even though they are starving for lack of a paying job.
*I've never been fired by a hipster, nor verbally/sexually attacked by one.
*My non-hipster employers are underpaying me.
*I've been mugged, but not by a hipster.
*The people who have swindled me out of money have not been hipsters, but landlords and real estate developers.
*Hipsters aren't leading bloody, hopeless wars, but my country is.
*I don't think hipsters are to blame for my crap medical insurance.
*Hipsters have never threatened to take my abortion rights away.
*My cheating, stealing, lying ex-husband was a scum bag, not a hipster.
*Teachers, not hipsters were the ones who said I wouldn't amount to anything.
I could go on and on. Actually I should hate a lot of people, but none of them are hipsters. |
Cool story. |

"WAHH QQ!! I hate my sub-urban mid-western lifestyle. It's so fake! I'm going to go live with minorities where it's totally real!!"--too bad you'll drive up the prices in that neighborhood, son.
"Momma says i'm unique! Look, at colorful short shorts!!!"--you look like every douchebag who looks like you!
"I'm all for tolerence and acceptance. BTW I hate Republicans, Christians, people who eat meat, you know, mainstream stuff!"
"I like Nietzsche and Foucault. Post-Modernism, YEAH!!!!"
Yeah, I'm not a fan of obfuse language, and unclear writing, with an unclear message. People spent cash getting PHDs revolving around that BS that it seems like anyone and their momma can do.
They are no different from the people they do not like. Instead of a mercedes benz to buy to show off, they drive hybrids to show off to to keep up with the jones' because that's their neighborhood norms, among other things. Same BS different name.
i could go on and on about these dbags.
hippies, punks, etc, are no different from hipsters. they just do things to hang out imo. |
You'll get a lot further in life if you start taking individuals on a case by case basis and stop labeling. |

Hipsters come in different variants. Pics posted so far are on the mild side. The ones I was encountering down in Williamsburg were like this...

grimy slimy good for nothing scumbags |

that's surely not limited to 'hipsters', and has even less to do with what they wear. |
Scarves aren't limited to hipsters either. I think hipsters do have an ideology: it's fairly obvious that how you project yourself is a reflection of who you are, or more importantly who you'd like to be, and the appearance of hipsters reflects their ideology. They very rarely purchase/wear/use products of major corporations, they very often wear things "ironically", they often display carefully cultivated eclectic taste, and of course this whole debate about inciting homophobia can easily be linked to an aggressive display of liberal values about gender and feminity.
All of the above is obviously generalisation and an element of assumption, I don't want to claim it as fact, because what are facts in this kind of discussion? With that said, there is a strong correlation of appearance, taste and ideology in the hipster image, and you can complicate it all you want. The biggest thing that annoys me about hipsters is not how they look but what they represent: cultural tribalism dressed up in irony and have-cake-and-eat clauses so people who think they're smart enough to transcend such behaviour can still participate in. Hipsters judge you on appearance, taste and beliefs as much as anyone else, and their liberal permissiveness is about as substantial as their atrophic leg muscles. |

You know, I agree completely with everything in your second paragraph, I do find those things gross and ing stupid, but the umbrella that the word 'hipster' now represents is far too large and the whole thing is getting ridiculous. There are s wearing every type of clothing under the sun and in almost every social group, just as there are nice people who might like to wear a scarf when out or shoes made locally.
People need to stop generalizing to such ridiculous lengths. As much as you try you cannot deny that each person is an individual and should be judged individually on their own merits, labeling and dividing serves no one.
I think nefardec's point here is that you cannot assume someone's identity just because of how they look, you can't judge their intention, their genuineness, or who they really are based on pictures or what you think their choice of fashion automatically implies. |

Life? What is life? Well, the 'Une cuiller' as the post-post-meta-modernists say, is that life is what you make of it. How does one get further in life? What is the form of life? There is no form of 'getting further' in life. Un bavard! THERE ARE NO GODS SO WE MUST CREATE OUR "FURTHER!" WE MUST BE OUR OWN FUHER SINCE THERE IS NO GOD! Science is just a social construct! YOU DONT KNOW WHAT I MEAN WHEN I SAY HIPSTER BECAUSE A PRIVATE LANGUAGE CAN NEVER EVER BE SHOWN TO THE WORLD!!! I AM RIGHT. I AM MY OWN GOD!!!
Yeah, that's why i hate hipsters and hipster culture, and bohemian cultures in general. all nonsense. |

Just because you don't understand, it doesn't mean it's nonsense.
Now please stop embarrassing yourself. Really. |

| I hate hipsters because I'm old and out of touch with the youth of today, truthfully. I still wear jeans and in t-shirts every day. In fact, I'ma start a new scene, called lamesters. You'll see. |

Being purposefully lame will be the new hip. In fact, it already is. The more ironically lame you look, the more hip you in fact are! |
