I disagree with a lot of Coulter's politics; however, these types of tactics employed to silence someone are; a) unacceptable in a free and open society, and b) entirely counter-productive as they simply give her a greater platform.

exactly.. except i agree with her "used to be cool" comment. LOL

fair enough - but my point was - the majority of students DID NOT want to hear/see her speak
maybe she should reschedule elsewhere?

freedom of speech is not a right that is protected only for the majority.

Or at least it shouldnt be.

Although these days in canada im more and more worried about this.

Canada is going down that slippery slope of "you are free to speak as long as we agree with you".

Just look at Ernst Zundel. The guy is a vile piece of as far as im concerned but to be arrested and deported for saying that the holocaust never happened is a dangerous precedent. If he wants to believe that and tell people that then let him. And those with the truth can counter his arguments!

Same with Ann Coulter. I disagree with a lot of what she says and i think her tactics are crass to say the least. But, she should be allowed to express them without fear of anything more than a verbal backlash.

The only right you dont have in a free society is the right to never be offended.

Those who think they do well and are morally justified in silencing their opposition are only doing themselves and their country a major injustice.

there is a slight difference between freedom of speech and making an ass out of themselves, by trying to appear "smart" and "outspoken"

none of arguments/statements/speeches she makes have anything positive to contribute to any of the topics - I feel she just out there to insult everyone and everything, and hide behind the facade of "freedom of speech"

people like that defeat the purpose of such freedom! she just comes across like a stand-up comedian from hell

watch yourself here. How is there a difference? Freedom of speech means freedom to make an ass out of yourself as well as the freedom of others to point out that you are being an ass. If we start making rules against being an ass, who determines that fine line? The government?

great! and thats a wonderful opinion. Now should those who disagree with you campaign to stifle your speech? because what you just said could be construed as negative and insulting. Im just saying.... ;)

jay is right on this one

if you dont like what someone is saying, feel free not to listen to him/her

censorship is the greatest enemy of democracy

you may think she's insulting and whatever, but other people might not think so. yeah, it means they are also morons, but that doesn't change the fact that they should have their right to freedom of speech too

the concept of right is not selective. it has to be universal (well, in general) regardless of whether you feel someone deserves those rights or not
