Yup. My family is 'East' German, so it was essentially the same thing for us back in the day. I remember being 4 years old and going over to visit, being interrogated on the train to go from west to east by the Stazi (the east German equivalent to the KGB) who were decked out with guns and dogs and went through all our luggage before grilling my parents on the nature of our visit. Interestingly enough, when we crossed back, we were considered 'lucky' to be able to do so, and the 'west' German border guards brought us Coke, chocolate and oranges!

I think it's more of a cycle. People fight for freedom only to become more dependent. And vice versa.

oh wow hehe :) but yeah I would imagine the West vs. East Germany situation was FAR worse then our communist "rule". I do also remember that travelling abroad to "bad" non-proletarian countries was not allowed, in case the capitalist would get their claws into you! But somehow people could easily afford to visit southern countries like Bulgaria for holidays at least once a year. Things like that were way more affotable and quality of stay was very decent. Social programs like summer camps and after school activities were all there and widely popular, unlike now. What else? We didn't have ANY foreign things, like movies or food or clothes. Owning a pair of Levi's was SUPER cool. Oh man, the memories! But that would probably be to the end of the communist grip over the countries..

watch yourself here. How is there a difference? Freedom of speech means freedom to make an ass out of yourself as well as the freedom of others to point out that you are being an ass. If we start making rules against being an ass, who determines that fine line? The government?

There's a big difference. Freedom of speech is an opinion. Making an ass out of yourself to keep making comments that you cannot validate with any facts and you use your ignorance to make others believe you. Sort of like Ann Coulter. She believes in everything she says and she could care less if she can back it up. Thats no longer freedom of speech, that's being self opinionated, or as FunkyCrew said, making an ass out or yourself.

If you don't believe me, watch her video about how she keeps claiming that Canada is not a good country because we no longer help the U.S fight its wars. Then she goes on and says that Canada aided the U.S in helping them in Vietnam when clearly we never did. When the newscaster attempts to correct her, she sits there like an opinionated bitch and tell him no and he's way off. So? is that freedom of speech or making an ass out of yourself ?

i find with most people, exercising their freedom of speech is making making an ass out of themselves (see Bush, George W.)

That's one person. He doesn't speak for everyone. That's like saying then people shouldn't protest or rally together since those are considered a form of freedom of speech. So do you consider protesters always making an ass out themselves because they stand up for something?

most times yes....because typically they don't accomplish anything but looking like a bunch of idiots with signs.

The real tragedy here is that the students get away with this . If we should be bitching about anything it should be that....not some chick who likes to hear her own voice.

i find that most of those protest rallies are excuse for the majority of that mob to be disturbers. but i digress

if these protesters are using just words to make their causes heard, i'm cool with it. (probably because their words go through one ear, and out through the other ear in my head)

but it's their actions often that makes asshattery out of themselves (yes, I'm looking at you, Tamils)

Every protest I've ever been to, there's always a guy selling "The Socialist Worker"
