How much will you pay to stop others from killing themselves? (TTC guard rails)

10 million dollars per station.

I would need to see more numbers about the suicides to see if the cost of clean up and shut down of service would be a significant help on the TTC.

I wouldn't pay anything to save someone's life however; if I would pay extra to make sure some idiot didn't make me late for a business appointment by throwing themselves onto the tracks.

We complain about a deficit yet consider an 800 mil suicide barrier project.

"250 suicides and attempts on the transit system between 1998 and 2007."

"In 2009, 18 suicides and attempts caused 1,364 minutes of delay for riders."

Based on the statistics given, I would vote against the project.

so, how long is the delay when one of those suicides actually happen? lol

why this was never thought of before and slowly implemented over the past ,what? 2 decades?, is amazing.

back in 1995 when I was in Hong Kong, such a system was already in place.

This is more than just a suicide thing but a safety issue as well. congested platforms, intoxicated commuters waiting and falling off, etc etc.

What I fail to understand is how it can cost 10 mil per station based on the simplicity of it all....but of course the TTC project managers and all need to make a couple Gs extra on each one too..

there are delays with and without suicides. It's not going to make the service any more efficient during rush hour

If they are considering it now it tells me there has probably been a recent lawsuit where the city was found liable. Its simply a risk management assessment that has probably shown its cheaper to spend the 800 million on a suicide barrier then to pay out future claims.

I'm w you.

They should spend that $$$ on that new tracking system for busses/trains AND on expanding their service nevermind the freaking suicide guard.

that would require toronto politicians to be forward thinking and innovative.

The TTC has always rejected them because of the cost: Automated train control is required so that the subway stops at the same place every time, and to convert the entire system to driverless control would cost a reported $800-million or more.

Really sounds like the union was pushing to prevent this.
How much would we save in salaries by automating the system?
A fully automated system might help improving the reliability of the system and reduce delays.

this is a good idea but bad timing. we cant afford it right now. And i too question 10 mill a station. For what exactly? Its plexiglass!! At most i cant see the materials costing more than a few hundred grand and the computer system a few hundred more. Tell me 1 million a station and youd make me a believer.

aaah fully automated sans driver? ok that makes more sense for the cost... even still kind of inflated. But we would save a ton of money on salaries
