To be "Lady Gaga popular" you need to make music like...Lady Gaga. Pay close attention to the Billboard Hot 100 if you want to get the basic parameters for mega-popularity. Then get to work writing those catchy choruses and hire a decent vocalist. Or use plenty of Autotune.

If that's your thing, good luck to you. :p

It takes A LOT more than that. Unfortunately it's not just about the music in the music industry... as weird as that sounds.

Yeah, it is also a lot about image, promotion, and the people you know. I am just talking about the music side.

There is not much to that Lady Gaga track or any of her tracks, besides a catchy chorus and hook. I don't think anyone can say the vast amount of EDM producers out there cannot make catchy EDM pop music like this. More importantly, this thread makes a point about the stories that are told about the possibilities of 4/4 EDM music.

Also, many pieces of EDM could be far more popular than they are, if given the opportunity to through better accessibility for the consumer. Its not about making something just like Lady Gaga's track, to be as popular as it. Its about the music that people make in EDM already having a huge potential market, that we are told does not exist. For various uncontrollable reasons. Because as this example shows, when there is control of accessibility to the consumer, EDM does quite and can do quite well. Now it up to the indie EDM industry to find better ways to create accessibility at all levels. And the most important would be avenues of commerce and marketing. The "genetic makeup" of the music itself is already ready for success, it has been for a long time.

ps: I dont make Lady Gaga type music, so no self induldgence here. At least not anytime soon. Just trying to help others see better.

Right, and all of that is stuff EDM producers and other creative minds could accomplish. There is far more creativity on the image and promotion side in EDM related music than any other genre I have seen. Whether its a video, vinyl art, album art, anything. The problem goes back to accessibilty of the potential market. If EDM producers had a chance to reach people, they would very easy and very quickly create the image, promotion, and networking side of things.

And Lady Gaga is not exactly attractive...the best part of her is her music. Of course her ridiculous image and shennagins has an attraction to it, but I think its purely novelty, her music is what keeps people coming back. Her image almost lives off of "look at this crazy bitch...hmm her music is good." If it was "look at this crazy bitch...hmm her music sucks." She would'nt have any fans at all. That said, i'm not downplaying image at all, its important, but again very doable for the creative minds of the EDM industry.

Really you are clueless Kismet. Gaga's success has nothing to do with edm and everything to do with her image, and the way she dresses.

It's all about throwing on as few clothes as possible; looking different than everyone else doing the same thing, and hiring a good management team.

You picked a very bad example to try and get your point across. However; I do agree with your assertion that the outlook is not as bleak for edm as people make it seem.

A lot of it really is about the music. Lady Gaga is quite catchy, and pretty well-produced. Of course the image is a big part as well, but she would not be so popular if she sounded like this:

It takes a combination of image + marketing skill + catchy songwriting.

I've heard she actually used to play the piano very well so I know she has musical talent but nonetheless; it's her image that sells.

Alanzo said it perfectly in comparison to Marilyn Manson. They should seriously get married. He has bigger boobs and she probably has a bigger dick! Lmao

Lady Gaga has one of the worste images in the history of mainstream success music. At one point she had a penis, the entire world was told she has a penis. Her shows and videos are ridiculous. For some reason she feels like she needs to be a spokesperson for gays and gay rights (i'm sure this is imposed on her by her overlords because she does EDM). And we know how much of the world is still against homosexuality due to their religous upbringings or morals. So how the heck does she have any sort of good image amongst the people of the world to reach 160 Million Views? She looks like a troll in comparison to someone like Madonna's prime or Britney Spears. Image is part of the package, but its the EDM music that pushes her success, her image is simply there for people to latch onto something, if her image was different, but still edgy, she would probably be even more successful, afforded by her music.
