That's right, I am talking about country music, specifically the slick modern variety pumped out of Nashville.
What are your thoughts on and experiences with this genre of music? Do you know anyone who listens to it? Is "country music" even made outside of the United States?
Lira
Yes, Brazilian country music is called "música sertaneja".
It's usually very fun to listen to and, judging by the title of this thread, it is also concerned with very different themes.
Brazilian country music, as far as I know, does not mention religion unless it's a bastardised Gospel version of the original thing. It doesn't really talk about patriotism either. Most of the time they just talk about failed relationships, the pursuit of love, and how fun it is to be in a rodeo.

almost every white person i know gets down with country to a certain extent. it's like they feel it's their heritage and therefore their duty to get down to billy ray cyrus or whoever it is that's "with it" in country.
then again i live in wisconsin, and grew up in a city surrounded by farms. people around that area love to embrace their southern heritage i guess? by driving around in their f150's with confederate flag stickers on their rear windshield. though they live in wisconsin, one of the states furthest north in the US. i dunno.
white people are stupid, is what i'm trying to say. :p
Sunsnail
not country, but folk is close aint it. its close to a rural southern/midwestern USA feel imo

Yeah, country is probably the whitest genre in the U.S. I've never known any blacks or Asians who listened to it, at least.

country is to white people as hip-hop is to black people i suppose.

It's even more extreme than that situation, though. I know plenty of whites and Asians who like hip hop, but no non-whites who like country.

I don't know anyone who listens to country. If I do, they're in the closet about it.
I can't relate to it in general, but if I were to visit somewhere that it seemed to fit the setting (i.e. amber waves of grain), I could probably get into the older, less polished stuff.

Reminds me of that scene from Crash (if you watched it you know what scene I'm talking about... I didn't understand it at the time, but it all makes sense now).
