i held off this game due to luke-warm reviews, and man that was a massive mistake. i don't think ive ever had this much fun with an RPG. its a little clumsy at times, and its also rather generic from a story point of view, but im loving the gameplay, freedom and player advancement options.
it obviously doesn't come with the same level of polish that we see from some of the $$-rich US/canada companies, but i can forgive things like terrible animations.
voice acting is actually pretty good considering its not an english title and while we've all seen the high-fantasy setting before, there are enough unique aspects to keep you interested.
anywayz, im off to go play some more with my double-handed-sword-wielding mage who casts priest spells :stongue: |

Generic story kills it for me, but I may have a closer look.
Is there a demo floating about? |

not sure about demo, i never try RPG demos. well, high fantasy always tends to be generic. but id say its less generic than dragon age, which despite the genericness was still a great game.
i think its hard to do fantasy and not generic at the same time. |

Not that hard to be fantasy and not eneric at the same time. All you have to do is free yourself from the shackles of tolkienism and make up something on your own. Not every ing fantasy game needs sleek tall archer elves and short bulky drunk dwarves with huge enough hammers to rival the ridiculous weapons in JRPGs. I adored DA, but it was in essence just Tolkien....but a little bit different.
Off the top of my head i remember Lionheart staying far away from tolkien as possible. No elves, dwarves or anything like that. Too bad that the gameplay went down the hill (or off the cliff more appropriately) after you left Barcelona. And it was so promising as well running on SPECIAL :( |

Lionheart was . Dragon Age was awesome.
The traditional fantasy setting is used because it works. It's not about being unique, it's about giving people what they want, and then putting your own twist on it.
And what's this obsession with linking everything to ing Tolkien? People can make things up by themselves you know, they didn't just read Tolkien books and then all of a sudden decide to copy everything
Read a Stephen Ericsson book, The Malazan Book Of The Fallen (series of 10). Far better than Tolkien in every way. It annoys me how for some reason Tolkien is seen by some people as the pinnacle of fantasy writing. |

I guess it didn't come off the right way in my first post but im not a fan of tolkien myself. Yet as you said people think of him as THE greatest fantasy writer off all time and will defend him, his style and his ideas of what a fantasy setting should look like to death and im quite sick of that. I was actually in an argument once (quite ashamed to admit that) with a tolkien fan who claimed that Gandalf was one of the more original characters ever and that a figure such as him (Old, gray and powerful wizard with a long beard) has never before appeared in writing before Tolkien came up with him. Just reading that cost me a few IQ points. Reading once that the elves in DA dont look realistic enough because they dont resemble Tolkien elves was a "Im talking with an idiot here" realisation as well.
And yes, Lionheart was a poor game, but i give it points for being fantasy and NOT having elves, dwarves and other such things in there.
Havent read the series you recommended yet, will put it in ym to read list. Im currently starting on the Kushiels Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey which is also quite a break from what Tolkien fanatics would consider "proper/tr00" fantasy.
I wonder if a game based on Chronicles of Amber would be possible? That is one of my fav fantasy series. |

i played so many hours today its embarrassing :tongue2 and i think there's certainly enough originality that the generic parts arent too much of a problem. and its got some great humour in it too.
*yawns* must be time for bed. |

| I'm in. Has anyone given Mount & Blade: Warband a shot? It just came out a few days ago, and I was surprised it's actually good...and it's not a big money game. No voice acting, so it's more of a traditional rpg with a board game kind of feel, but with live action fighting like in DA. |

Oh I don't dislike Tolkien, I just don't think he's the pinncale of fantasy writing. That's all. For what it's worth, Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit are fantastically written books and well thought out stories, but I wouldn't consider them #1.
Here's Eriksons books: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malazan_Book_of_the_Fallen
They are pretty fantastic when you're for example reading book 4 and something from book 1 clicks in your head, but then you remember that he's been writing them as he goes along and book 4 hadn't been written back then. The foresight and vision of the guy is spectacular, as is the completely unique magic system he developed and how it intertwines between worlds and dimensions.
I'm up to book 5 now, while my brother is on book 9. 10 hasn't come out yet. My brother keeps telling me to find time to read the next 4 because they get even more spectacular. There's a certain event that happens in one of the books that actually had me in tears, that's how well it's written. |

look at you two homos trying to turn this into book club :p
i reckon i wasted another 10hrs on divinity today. :toothless im only stopping now coz my eyes are tired and i wanna see part 3 of the pacific. not sure ive ever played a game for this long before!
oh, and tolkien sucked dick. had he spent as much time crafting the narrative as he did waffling on about the trees, LOTR would've been way better. |
