Eh, maybe we do have a sense of entitlement then. Maybe Liquified has spoiled us. But we did go a good 5 months without trance iirc. During that time, Charlotte got:
Markus Schulz
Gareth Emery
Andy Moor
Above & Beyond (I think they were our last trance act last fall though?)
Armin van Buuren
So...I guess we are spoiled and have this sense of entitlement. 4 of those DJs came to the SE and didn't stop here (let's not count A&B). A few people were really bummed about that...because those are 4 of the hottest DJs in the trance scene. Gareth being the big one in my opinion. Guy absolutely kills it everywhere he goes. And we just heard he's going back to Charlotte in June. Put that together, and it kind of sucks for people who don't want to drive 3.5-4 hours for trance.
Sure, we just got a nice batch: Acosta, Max, Doorn. But then you look at it...and for actual trance, there is nothing on Liquified's list. Some of the listed DJs play some trance. Some of those DJs are amazing (Kazell, Marco V). But there's no trance in sight for a few months again after Doorn tomorrow night.
If you take the gap we just had and the gap we're about to have. It makes sense for the trance addicts to be like "What has happened to Atlanta lately?" Liquified has spoiled us I guess. From the summer of 2003 to the fall of 2009...I was at a show once a month it felt like. Other people probably feel the same way. That stretch probably goes back even further, but I don't know.
I've always said Liquified has done a great job. They really have. I've thanked them dozens of times. My only complaint (and insult?) has been the lack of coordination or whatever you want to call it with the last few Tiesto shows. He's making it sound like we'll see some trance again in the fall. Which is nice and all, but damn, it does suck a little to go even longer without a trance act again.
So...in the meantime...can ya'll just let us trance fans voice our displeasure that Charlotte is getting some of the hottest trance DJs in the scene while Atlanta gets Steve Aoki and whoever... |
Just because you don't see it now in the calendar that I posted doesn't mean other dates won't be added. Also keep in mind that summertime is festival circuits and Ibiza months so getting dates are not as easy as they are in the fall. |

Once again: I have nothing against anyone voicing their opinion about who they'd like to see come through town (I do that all the time). I'm just tired of the needless moaning and comments about how Atlanta sucks, and would like to see that time/energy put into something a bit more pro-active. That's all.
But do as you will, I won't argue it any further. |

Yeah, we are very fortunate to have experienced promoters and a great trance scene here in Atlanta. Then again, we live in the ninth most populous metropolitan area in the US.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_...atistical_Areas
Now that doesn't necessarily imply that Atlanta has the ninth largest trance-addict population in the US, but I'd think that the frequency of EDM shows here should roughly match the scenes in some of the other top-10 cities. In some cases, we're much better off (compared to Houston, DFW, Philly (?)), and in other cases we're much worse (NYC, LA, Miami). Also, Charlotte is #33 on that list, and they've had some incredible weekend shows lately -- so maybe all this is irrelevant.
Still, until we achieve NYC/LA-levels of awesomeness, trance fans will always want the scene to improve, and we will be disappointed when it worsens. As I said in other threads, I've been really happy with the recent direction of the trance events (Saturday shows are back, and the last two were awesome!), though in some ways it isn't quite as nice as it was a year or two ago (yet!), especially when we didn't see any really big trance events this past winter.
I'm sure promotion is not just a business but a labor of love -- but it's mostly business, and most of us just don't have the time/money to participate beyond giving feedback here and spending money on the shows we enjoy.
Huh, this is kinda repetitive. I get the feeling that I either posted or read the above message verbatim in another thread months ago. Hey, while we're complaining about Atlanta's nightlife problems and complaining about complaining (like we do in every thread), can we at least talk about something new? What we really need is a later last-call and a better-funded public transportation system that runs later. A city as progressive and lively as the ATL shouldn't have to deal with this backwards-puritanical-class-warfare bull. Just throwing it out there. We ought to be watching the sun rise outside Opera; we'd have such epic 12am-6am sets that we wouldn't even care that it only happened once a month. |

| Haven't people like us signed like half a dozen petitions to get the clubs to stay open an extra hour? Starting to feel like a lost cause...if we can't even get 4am back, I doubt we'll ever see 6am :( |

Except none of my questions or comments are ever directed at you...or nrjizer...or basically any of the people who preach about how I need to become a promoter myself or move cities or change my taste in music...etc. |

| Atlanta will never be on the same page as cities like NYC, Miami and LA. Our tourism is nowhere near the same level, and the level of living compared to those 3 cities is significantly lower. |

Just read the first few pages of this, and MATT DAREY IS CALLED HOUSE?
I can't believe you guys don't know how picky you are when you say Atlanta sucks. :wtf: |

LA-levels of awesomeness |
i am definitely loving LA and going out... but having said that, every EDM party i've been to (which I've had fun at nonetheless) has had extremely high levels of douchebaggery. think thousands of Ed Hardy / Affliction wearing guys with tons of jewelry (hell, even i've started to buy necklaces for the sole purpose of clubbing, FML).
all i'm trying to say is that its all relative. LA has good people but the people in ATL can't be replaced... i miss you 3rs. |

obviously the city is littered with posh clubs and who's who guestlists, but they have a great underground scene there. |

ditto. and it helps that there are so many events (not all "huge" parties necessarily) on a regular basis that you can plan your night/venues around what genre of music you are in the mood for. |

For those of you interested in trance:
Check out the event I made (The Jungle @ Colab). There will be several hours of trance played throughout the night, most likely in the 1am-6am time range. My friends who play trance get a lot of their song suggestions from me, so if you like me preference in music, some of these DJs will be right up your alley. :)
Unfortunately I'm not in the planning part of the event, so the details are coming to me in bits. But if you're free Saturday, May 22nd, come check this out. Will be a lot of trance and other genres on display. I definitely recommend it. |
