....I would be all over a Robocop remake :(

Why the confession? The original was a grossly misunderstood social indictment that has been unfortunately lumped with canon 80s sci-fi like the Terminator. It's in fact a truly pricless satire that is violently relevent even today, I'd say. System-J can probably elaborate even more.

I look forward to a reboot as well - they could do even more with it, given a respectful director and a more sizable budget.

THIS! But it needs to be completely overhauled. They took this cool concept and boiled it like that scene with the bacon in Better Off Dead.

You're so wrong it hurts me.

They should call it Brown Dawn and have Iran invade Denver!

That it should be remade or that they over-played the concept?

It's official...hollywood has completely run out of ideas.

Nope, they've just realized that these remakes have a higher probability of making money.

Or maybe it's just business...

Exactly. I miss the originality too, but it is a business after all.

the one movie i am really interested in that's being remade out of that list is 'Robocop'. Only reason why? 2 words. Darren Aronofsky. I have faith he will do a good job with it. might be ill-fated, but hell I'm a fan of his work. :(

+1. Excellent combo. Is this confirmed or rumor? IMDB has no info listed.

+1. Has potential to be decent if they pull it off right.

Nostalgic
They forgot to mention the Dune remake. The David Lynch version was a disaster, and I would give a remake/reboot a chance.

Well, I actually think most of the satire is levelled at right wing views on subjects such as religion, crime and morality, as well as the whole genre of 80s action cinema itself (which was the embodiment of conservative ideology anyway) which were incredibly prevalent in Reagan-era American culture. It wouldn't bite as hard to mock these subjects when Obama is in power and modern action movies are so pussified compared to their 80s brethren.

I knew a dirty little girl when I was in elementary school and we called her Brown Dawn.

If someone were to remake Better Off Dead, I'd fight them with a ski pole.

You make some excellent points. I'm not sure how a reboot of Robocop would work with the concept of soft power thesedays. Would have to really put its neck out and I'm not sure Aronofsky has the balls for that, apt as he may be.

They could never. ever. do better than the original. So much ing work was put into it, there's simply no way. It's like trying to remake the Sistine Chapel or something.

I see your point. Still, I think there's certainly enough to base the satire on, today, even with Obama, in office - and it's not as though he's above the fray, currently - even though my fingers are crossed for a turn-around.

I tend to think a darker portrayal is in order, a la Miller & Darrow in Hard Boiled.

Robo I was decent and I don't ever think I've seen my dad laugh as hard as that scene with the robot in the board room, after that guy dropped the weapon and people kept pushing him out from their enfilade. He points to the screen and says, "That's just like corporate America."

Robo II, however, started the decline, although it had it's moments. Robo III got ing preachy about it. It was like watching an episode of the A-Team, only with less substance and more moral tale.
