I am referring to out cognitive abilities not our biological make up.
We have evolved.
Don't even try and quote some research you read on-line about self awareness of dogs or chimps or whatever, because it is sketchy at best, and even if proven correct it is quite limited when compared to ourselves.
Just look at all we have achieved. How many other animals facebook, cook dinner, star in porno's or put up dry wall?

Animals are "comprising multicellular organisms that have a well-defined shape and usually limited growth, can move voluntarily, actively acquire food and digest it internally, and have sensory and nervous systems that allow them to respond rapidly to stimuli: some classification schemes also include protozoa and certain other single-celled eukaryotes that have motility and animallike nutritional modes." Simple as that.
By your argument, you could say that a primate is "less of" an animal than a worm because of its cognitive abilities.

Thus all organisms existing on our planet now that are eukaryotes (multicellular organisms) fit under one of those Kingdom cantegories. Can you guess which one we fit into?
Its impossible to evolve out of an animalia classification unless severe severe mutations occur that would not allow us to not be multicellular and eukaryotic and heterotrophic. OH and lacking rigid cell walls like plants.
So next time you make an idiotic statement as the one you have made above (i didnt bother reading it after you stated that we have "evolved") please pick up a grade 7 biology textbook and look at "animal" in the glossary.

you took it a bit far there jake, to be an animal you don't necessarily need to have a nervous system (look at sponges).
heterotroph, lack of rigid cell wall, multicellular
thats the foundations of the most basic animal.

Yeah, but the crux of my point is still there.

I'm just going to play devil's advocate for a second and make the argument that if we're animals, too, then the same rules should apply to us. Just because a child would be a part of our specific species doesn't change the fact that, at the end of the day, it's really just another mammal.
I agree if you try to say that objectively, changing one mammal for another won't make a difference. However, that's not how we work.
It's just part of a continuum of how much a person may care in different occasions: We just tend to be more protective of the species and specimens we can't relate to. Unless you're the ultimate hippy, no one would care if they threw some lettuce in the tank. Some people that showed distress in this thread clearly could feel empathy for the mice in some way, so there's a point in the continuum were their empathy started to show. Some other people may be more shocked at the sight of their pet mice being chomped by a bunch of carnivore fish, given the love we usually have for anything we care for. Others still may find unsettling to see a person being devoured by an animal, even if they don't know the person. And, the most egotistical amongst us would probably be in despair only if the body of someone they held in high regard were pierced in slashed by the teeth of those killer machines. Even Arbiter would shed a tear, I believe, if he saw Nietzsche being thrown in the tank.

But it's the biological makeup that actually matters. Cognitive abilities just means that we lead a "better" lifestyle. Sure, we cook dinner, post on Facebook and jerk off to porn on our walls, but throughout all of it, we're still animals. We post on Facebook to be part of a social system, cook dinner to replenish and nourish ourselves, and jerk off to porn because of our biological desire to reproduce.

I'll accept that. :p

you are wrong lunar_phase
We are animals period. End of story. developement of the brain is not grounds for a new kingdom classification.
And the term "animals" has nothing to do with cognitive makeup. Its what me and jake so clearly defined a couple of posts back.
Read a basic biology book. You will understand.

I did evolutionary Biology at the University of Leeds. Our cognitive abilities are what separates us from animals.

I said that because I recognise that we can split hairs and class ourselves as animals, in the same way you can split hairs and say that a virus or crystal could technically be referred to as a living thing.
But your post clears it all up for me, I now know it's you behind this video...
