Jack Moss - Excession [Drum & Bass]

This is possibly the last genre mix I will share on TA. It completes another trilogy of mixes along with Regressive House and Close Your Eyes, all intended to combat defeatist nostalgia by playing good new music in styles people assume are dead. This is basically a mix of atmospheric drum 'n bass. Those more clued into the scene than I am might use terms like "drumfunk" to describe parts of it, but all you need to know is it's lush melodic, sci-fi jungle.

Some of the tracks are as old as 2006, some were released last week. It starts off ultra-mellow and builds up to something more energetic. I know TA is a little shy on breakbeats, but if you've never got into drum 'n bass before, this might be the mix for you.

Cool to see Bass Flo got signed. I remember liking his tunes a couple of years back when he started out and Bailey used to play him on 1xtra.

As usual with these atmospheric dnb mixes, some great tunes (that LM1-track is great), and others which don't really leave much of an impression. Seemed to be around 50/50 for this one. I quite liked the very brief and inobtrusive mixing style used as well, suits the music perfectly.

I had a feeling you'd give this one a listen. I did try and avoid tracks that were too wallpapery, but I imagine you've heard a lot more of this stuff than I have, so what's fresh and interesting to me might not be to you.

The mixing is brief because these tracks are not forgiving to DJs. There was only one percussive intro in this mix to work with, and even the ambient intros always seem to have some lazy hi-hat patter in the background that needs matching up. The tracks feel less like DJ tools and more like self-contained pieces, so I thought it was best to let each piece resolve itself and then move smoothly into the next one, rather than overlaying and disrupting big chunks of each track's structure.

Hmmm. I can usually only take DnB in small doses, but this intrigues me. Will give it a whack. :)

Nice set, Jack. Very lush indeed, mixing was perfect, and the tunes were pretty good. However, the flow seemed a bit one note even though you did escalate things nicely toward the end. Overall pretty solid, but the tracks were so similar that nothing really stood out like I was hoping. However, it was musically satisfying and I enjoyed it.

When you say this is the last "genre" set you will release, does that mean you're finished making mixes? :(

Glad you enjoyed it. The aim of the flow was to go from this angelic whispy opening to something darker and moodier in the mid-section and more energetic towards the end.

About the genre set thing: what I mean by that is a mix themed around a particular genre. That's pretty much what I've been known for since the epic house mixes. I try to do something different with each mix I share. Perhaps this will be a James Holden thing and I'll make a load of over-ambitious crap when people would be much happier hearing endless mixes of progressive house/breaks, but it won't be boring.

Didn't see this posted yesterday. Checking this out for sure, Jack.

I've gotta say that I was pleasantly surprised by this mix. DnB isn't really my "thing", but this really puts a different spin on it and brings out the best of the genre, which is kinda what I've learned to associate you with. That said, I hope that you don't stop making "genre mixes". I really like the fact that you are able to open my eyes to genres I typically ignore by presenting the gems contained therein.

Mixing and technical aspects all sounded great and made a great soundtrack for my workday today. I'll probably give it another listen tomorrow (it's hard to get through an entire set uninterrupted, so I always try to listen through a few times.)

Great job as always, Jack. Thanks for sharing.
