I'm not sure combining countries is a good idea but I'm going to make one specially for you, Ian.

So, Mexico and Brazil, right? I'll do them tomorrow.

It's fine to like certain teams and wish them well but not at the expense of your own country. Maybe the rest of us just have more national pride than you do, though I know many MANY Brazilians and they have extremely strong national pride.

I just can't accommodate nationalism in the way I see the world: I don't think you're any less special than my neighbour, and I don't think anything from my city must be necessarily better than anything else from Sidney. To me, being proud to be >insert nationality here< is as pointless as being proud to be born in a given month of the year. I see you as someone as special/interesting/valuable as a fellow countrymen. We're awesome, but so is everyone else.

I never picked you as a simple, parochial miscreant maligned by ruling class ideology ;)

I'm not talking about loving your country, your flag or your prime minister. That is the stuff that leads to hatred and people enlisting to get killed for no good reason. The national football team is not a symbol of the ruling class but an expression of sporting culture. The English national squad is a direct representation of how this country plays and thinks about the sport, and they are an indelible part of the country's sporting psyche. Its success and failure reflects everything from local community sports to the Premiership, the entire English philosophy of playing football which is dictated by the grass-roots culture of this nation we all contribute to and are all a part of.

You can do whatever the you like over in Australia, but you will not get what it means to be an England supporter.

haha yeah, im not trying to get the "english experience". its just a game, not a religion to me. but dont bollock on about how people should support their own national team as if that makes any sense. ive never been interested in australian football.

Well, you watch the match and support the team. If the team you support wins, good. There isn't much more to it :conf:
