I don’t get what’s so damn difficult about not going to bed.

The important thing to do is to have a good blaze of productivity before it gets light. Don't settle down into a "I've got all night" mentality and wank loads of time away on Youtube. Get hyped up for it. You won't really start to feel it until it's light outside, and your brain won't really turn to mush until about 11am. You've got to work hard early before tiredness sets in. After 11am I tend to swing between peaks of hyperactive energy and extremely lethargy for the rest of the day.

Also: avoid being warm and comfortable. You will start to drift in such surroundings. Keep cold, keep fresh, keep relatively active. And definitely do not, at any point, think "I'll just have a nap to freshen up". That way madness lies.

The real challenge in all-nighters is not obliterating your sleeping pattern afterwards. Your body is owed an extra night of sleep - 8 hours - so go to bed at least 8 hours earlier than usual. This sleep won't be great sleep, though. You'll almost certainly wake up about halfway through and feel refreshed. Pros know this is a cunning trick by the body and wait it out.

Rofl, I always do exactly the opposite of just about everything you said. Only once did I ever take a nap though - I HAD to!!

Whenever I pull all nighters (pretty much every time I write an essay), I around all night, getting only a paragraph done if I'm lucky, and then finish basically the whole paper in the final hour or two in the morning. I'd probably stop doing it if I didn't always get the marks I want.

Then why bother with the all nighter?
You are super smart and gonna nail it anyway ... ??

Yeah, especially with all that stress induced elevated cortisol.

I just don't like doing work. I don't actually leave ALL the work till the last minute. I'm a good student in that I'm always on top of the course readings and participate in class, etc..so when it comes to writing papers I don't really struggle with showing that I understand what's going on. I always know exactly what I need to say and how I'm going to back it up, and I always get the research out of the way in advance. So I end up telling myself "The hard work is already done - all you have to do is put it all together SOYOUMIGHTASWELLLEAVEITASLONGASYOUCANLOLOLOLOL."

I can relate to this so much I can actually see that happening before my eyes from a dozen different angles!

Haha, I wouldn’t know. for some reason this lazy aussie was pretty organised with assessment. Never had to do an all-nighter for school.

Play with your uncle's prescription medication dispenser.

Provided you live with him or otherwise have access to it.

Then help yourself to some of it.

*jealous*

You know what? The next time you show any sign of appreciation for the number crunching beauties that surround me in daily life, I'll remind you that the sole reason why I have to put up with that is because I entirely lack any sense of discipline, so I first hang out with them and only then I do whatever tasks I've been assigned!

...

I wish I had just some discipline...

the only cool things about all nighters is that you get this big perspective on life. you start to notice the little things like the stages of night, it gets very quite a peaceful, you feel like you're the only one awake, then gradually the world begins to wake. you truly know you've pulled an all nighter when you start to hear the birds beginning to chirp and the sun begins to rise. if you meet your deadline you feel relived, but no cares about your heroics.
