I know one of the directors at myspace and their team went from several dozen people to just him - all the rest got cut.
They are trying to bring it back, but sadly in the lamest way. Have you not seen the posters for "married on myspace". Basically two people who met on myspace and you get to watch their life and I think in some sense control it by suggesting crap stuff for them to do. It's so lame it hurts.
I think myspace just don't realize that they should stop being a full platform social networking site and just be a media networking platform. Facebook has already killed them in the mass social networking market but facebook is crap for anything else. Myspace should focus on music/sound, graphic arts, modelling/acting, etc -
in fact myspace. Who wants to make the next myspace with me? |

Wow - thanks for that insight DJ RANN! That is pretty lame. Count me in on creating the next myspace. Looks like you've already got a name picked out:
:haha: |

It's dying if not dead already. I used to solely use Myspace both personally and for promoting my music and among creating a personal facebook account I saw just how many people had transitioned over.
I think social networking sites are bad for music because they're always going to be constantly changing and a new one will pop up. It's all a cycle. Unfortunately I haven't had much time for dj'ing or production lately as when i realized myspace was dying it was time to come up with a new plan.
I think a website is an artists greatest tool presently. Going through most of my artists I follow I only found 10 or so that have legitimate sites if any site at all. I've been working with a web/graphic designer for the last few weeks and think things will be a lot easier when I can just give my web address instead of giving 8 different social networking links. I think it's still beneficial to have the social networking sites but they are coming and going so quickly right now that I fully believe an artists website should ALWAYS be the home base. Throw the twitter, myspace, facebook and youtube links on the website but I just think it's easier if you have one place with not only all of your information but content as well.
System wise myspace was/is far superior to the other social networking sites though. If only they hadn't started with all of the ads and other worthless like the married at myspace stuff Rann spoke about. |

myspace is run by big media...there is no way it will return to the glory that comes from the independent spirit it started with.
facebook is headed that way too...if it gets bought out or goes public. maybe they're getting themselves ready to sell out, with all the privacy and design changes.
Soundcloud...is not bad for now. Lets see how it grows. The prices are a bit steep. |

Myspace is totally useless. It was very useful back then, people would just browse the music section and just add you as a friend, and they were actual living people who want to see what you are up to, not another fellow artist with a bot.
It's a spam filled website that I just abandoned.
I do use twitter for following artists though, it's not good for finding new ones though. |

| What's wrong with MySpace? Still seems to work fine for me. :P It's an easy way for people to listen to my music and it helps me feel cool because I have 1,000 friends. :D |

Yeah, I agree with you guys there. So, maybe the question should be, can soundcloud find a way to reach a larger, more general (i.e., non-musician) audience? |
Here's the thing: why would it want to? Social networking isn't the best place to find new people to listen to your music, at least not anymore. If a musician uses sites like Myspace or Facebook it should be to connect with other musicians or labels, not with random people in the hope they'll find more fans. It could be used as a place where established fans can listen to music you've uploaded, but if you're an amateur musician on a website that has people who aren't there specifically to find new music, they can't, won't and shouldn't care about your music one way or another.
It sucks but quite frankly most of the music uploaded on sites that allow you to upload whatever you want is going to have 1 good track for every 40 or 50, it's just not worth it for those people to dig through them.
That being said there was a website called Rithum a while back, it was short lived but it was an incredibly useful site. You applied to the main site, showed them their music, and if the administrator felt your music was good enough, you got your own custom page with a very nice Flash and HTML music player that could be embedded anywhere you wanted. The fact that the accounts had to be approved meant virtually anything on a Rithum account was going to be at least of a decent quality. I think if SC did anything like that, it'd do wonders, especially if it got a decent reputation as only accepting good music. And by good I just mean well-produced, not something a bit more subjective. |

A lot of the fans went to Facebook and Twitter. But the bigger problem is now that the fans will always go to the new medium. Myspace has proven they are unable to compete anymore and recently have lost a good chunk on their traffic. Something needs to be come up with that can withstand these surges of people going to new mediums of sites. |

Yeah, exactly, but that raises the question of why? Or, more specifically, why didn't/doesn't myspace adapt? I would think that a site as huge as myspace would've had the resources to do a complete makeover, simplify it, or whatever it takes to reinvent itself. But, it seems to me, particularly in light of DJ RANN's post above, that myspace is content to just slowly fade away into irrelevance. |
