If you can't get your hands on A SINGLE turntable...you really shouldn't be DJing.

We're back to the argument; "let's make music less accessible to make it seem more exquisite and argue that it's because we don't want it overplayed". It's unnecessarily elitist and it can be argued that it's saying the track is mediocre because it needs special "treatment" to really be enjoyed.

I do get the idea of accessible = more buyers = more signings/releases = more . But that should work the other way around as well, so I don't think this justifies the vinyl-douchebaggery.

edit: yes a little butthurt

What if people aren't buying these records to DJ, but rather to listen to? The majority of dance music never makes it onto an artist album, so if you want to play these tracks at home you have to buy the single versions.

I'm not one to sympathise with people bitching about Beatport prices, but the vinyl is really an out-dated and heavily flawed musical medium, defended today only with esoteric claims about its sound quality and retro appeal. They're expensive, fragile, hold a small amount of music and are not easily transcribed to digital. The vinyl comparison riposte is like responding to someone criticising an over-priced laptop by saying "You clearly never bought a computer in the days when a 90mhz PC cost $1500".

Those are good points, I just don't understand the reason behind complaining about vinyl only releases/labels. If one wants them that badly, just pony up the money for a turntable and join the ranks of the few that can actually still play vinyl only stuff :p

you know that most clubs here in Panama donīt even have turntables. we use the 1000s and its variables.

you can ask damian lazarus, who didnīt bring one single record to play. :haha:

It reeks of elitism. Whatever the intentions are, the end result still is a cliquish message that a given production should only be heard/played/owned by certain people, even if the only barrier to entry to that group is $1-$2k at any open-to-the-public music supply store. As mentioned, vinyl has always been impractical for any type of use. It's only recently that there have been legitimate replacements for it, so the only people left with the 'ability' to play vinyl are those who either A) have been around since the days when it was a requirement or B) want recognition from those in group A.

I own a number of vinyls, mainly because of the appeal of the format and/or the value that results from it. There are only a few of them I've even put on a turntable, though, because I would rather keep them as they are, and because, whether it's for listening purposes, or mixing for my own amusement, the alternatives are far quicker, cost-effective, and, to my ear, acoustically superior. Add to that the fact that the selection is far greater, as the number of CD/SACD/DVD/Download-only releases far outnumber vinyl-only releases [for newer releases--obviously, the farther back you go, the more this shifts, eventually in favor of vinyl], and it leaves little reason for me to abandon this stance.

If someone can provide evidence that distributing releases as vinyl-only indirectly leads to greater sales or profit, I'll take back my point, since that result is a tangible and logical justification. I'm doubtful that it is the case, though I am about as far from an expert on record label revenue and expenses as I am on anything.

It's a cop out argument to say "If you love the music enough/want these records enough, you'd drop the grand on the equipment." It's like some manipulative wife saying "If you really love me, you'll buy me the expensive bag". Not everyone has a wad of cash to blow on such a luxury purchase so they can buy a few records. I love music, but I love music, not the piece of plastic it comes on. I'm not being suckered into paying over the odds by that argument.
