I've never heard that. Twice this summer tourists told me how much they love Toronto b/c people have been so friendly and helpful.

I dunno! lol

Its amazing how there is no grey area. People either understand this idea or they dont.

I've never heard that either. Also, almost anyone I encounter says people are very helpful in the streets when they ask questions.

I think you just have this warped idea of Toronto and only consider scenarios that support this warped idea, and not scenarios that refute it.

Absolutely not true. Maybe it's you guys who aren't friendly, and not everyone else. :tongue2

My best experience I had with a Torontonian on the subway was just this past summer during my last week of work. I was sitting down waiting for the subway and had taken off my high heels and was switching for flats. The woman next to me said something like "Had enough of those eh?" And I said something back to her and then we started talking about how I am in law school, and am going to practice criminal law. Turns our her daughter is a crown attorney at one of the court houses I was assigned to. I was actually quite disappointed when she had to get off as I was enjoying talking to her.

aww - I had a very similar convo with the lady who was changing her shoes on Friday... she was muttering to herself "ing heels" and then caught my eye and we both started laughing, and then talked about our day and where we are from

not so long ago I had an interesting conversation with a lady at the food court next to my work - all started off with me having a spare quarter for her so she wouldn't have to break a $20

I'm convinced that everyone who complains about all these mystic cold and unfriendly people is just rude and arrogant on the streets themselves :)

Jay you seemed to be the weird one lol
the only person I've ever met out of town who disliked Toronto was a Frenchie who was in her first year in uni. with me and disliked her program, so she packed and left after first semester lol

I'm glad you all have had positive experiences there, but do you really think a major beer corporation would put up billboards like that if there wasn't a popular sentiment to back it up? I'm not personally saying I agree with it or not, I'm just saying it's not just Jayx1.

Just curious as to what everyone thinks of people from Toronto (in general). I am from a smallish town and came to Toronto for university. During university I thought people from Toronto were great and was wondering why there was all those stereotypes out there of Toronto people being cold, unfriendly, tight-assed, etc... but now that I look back on it, none of my friends from university were actually from Toronto (they hadn't grown up here).

Then I started working in Toronto (financial district) I finally encountered real Toronto people, only to realize that Toronto people (in general) do actually suck. Everyone who I do like turns out to be from some smaller town (like Kingston or Guelph, etc.).

Is this true of Toronto People or did I just get unlucky and get stuck with a bunch of cold, bitchy, materialistic, tightassed people who don't know how to have fun?

Trust me. I used to work in the financial district. There is not a more materialistic, me-first, and "hey you may have worked hard on that, brought it up from nothing, but that's mine too now" attitudinal enclave in this city. Nowhere.

So there's your problem right there.

I used to think like this, but it IS all about who you actually encounter and trying to not let those that you have negative experiences with influence things and how you view the people living here.

As was said before, I don't think people from small cities/towns thinking people from big cities are colder and have less time for people is something that's unique to Toronto. You could say this about anywhere (London, Paris, New York, etc).

You think Torontonians are cold and have no time for their neighbours? Try going to Paris.

In comparison to where I grew up (Barrie) people are not as friendly... but I am sure compared to other major cities we are all quite friendly. We have the Canadian charm :)
