Jack Moss - Improper Trance [Glowsticks/Unicorns/Lasers]

I know it's only been a month since the last one, but there are several mixes I've had on ice throughout 2010, so they'll be coming thick and fast until 2011. This is something simple, light-hearted and utterly unoriginal. It's a mix of trance favourites from the turn of the millenium!

The basic reasoning is twofold: Firstly, I've got so sick of this "death of trance" meta-narrative that says there was no good made after 1996 and all epic trance was a plague. The title refers to the fact this mix is totally the opposite of hypnotic, deep "proper" trance and yet the music still has loads of creativity, invention and (gasp) fun at work. Trance isn't a ing binary, kids!

Secondly, I wanted to play some 1999-2002 era trance that wasn't all the same bloody mixes of the same bloody tracks. I've noticed that the American TAs tend to have been introduced by the high-profile ISOS/Tranceport level compilations from Oakey, Tiesto and co. I guess they were the only mixes getting marketed over there, but in the UK trance was so big every label would churn out cheap, digitally mixed trance compilations that couldn't afford to license all the big hits and so featured some less popular material. I'd go to my local small-town record shop, buy these bargain-bin trance CDs that had five good tracks out of 30 and collate the highlights onto home-made mix tapes to play on my Walkman. Those tapes were where I first learned about flow and programming, and this mix features the highlights of those highlights.

Improper Trance by JackMoss

(By the way, some of these tracks are really ancient MP3 rips excavated from my hard-drive from a semi-theoretical time period before mankind discovered bit-rates. I think it adds to the charm)

Those are the big hits on here, but I did try and use more unusual versions. Breaks remixes, rare remixes, etc. Also: can you believe that ResuRection hasn't been used on a single compilation for five years, not even by Gatecrasher/Ministry Of Sound? Given how massive it was, it's really fallen out of trance classics rotation.

EDIT: Also, I'm not just making retro mixes these days. Got some much more interesting stuff forthcoming as well.

looks like my honeymoon period lol.

i feel sorry for resurection, it could be worse tho there could be 15,000 2010 'updates' of it

Maybe it has something to do with resurection being one of the most overrated tracks ever. My opinion of course.
SYSTEM-J
Not so much overrated but overplayed. Now it's not being played absolutely everywhere I can hear it on its own merits again. And it would be impossible for me to leave it out of such a mix, because it was basically the tune that made me stop playing videogames as a teenager and start spending all my money on music instead. Without ResuRection I would definitely not be here today.

Teezdalien
Fair enough. I've just always disliked the track for the fact that it's too lollypop esque and child like and not really what I like to hear as an adult. (even more so on the dancefloor!)
SYSTEM-J
I don't really get what you mean by "lollypop esque". While the main melody is very simple (I learned how to play it on the keyboard) the mid-section of the track is where the real action is.
