Many things that pretty much everyone agrees about are wrong as a factual matter.

Wrong.

it's actually based on plato's cave :)

Not really, "Brain In A Vat" is just a modern, more science-flavored version of Descartes' evil demon thought experiment. Plato's cave allegory is not put forth as a motivation for global skepticism.

Geez, it has been ages since I talked about philosophy. Kind of feels good for a change.

no i mean matrix is based on the cave, not the brain in a vat, though they're similar...

Matrix is: We're in the cave, somebody brings us up to the truth, we find it extremely hard to deal with (and initially want to return to the cave), until we realise how great TRUTH is, and then we seek to enlighten the masses with our amazing connection to the metaphysical :p

it's actually a quite direct parallel of it... the evil demon would be associated more with nihilism (until you add cogito into the mix) whereas the cave is extremely idealistic/positivist, as is the matrix... It's not really saying nothing is real, it's saying the 'normal' world isn't real, but the transcendental one is

Ahh, yes, the story line is similar. Even if the technological apparatus is basically the same as BIV. Sort of a combo I guess.

They definitely have big parallels though, descartes probably lent from the idea too, they all loved plato after all :p

always happy to talk anything philosophical anyway JBJ, hit me up if you wanna throw random paradigm-shifting ideas around out of boredom etc :gsmile:

I know, I am saying they took the superficial features of the BIV scenario (rather than the philosophical import), and combined it with a cave allegory kind of story.

So you are saying the Indians and Chinese agree Jesus existed? You do realize they comprise about 1/3rd of the global population.

As far as I can tell perhaps 40 million out of the 2.4 Billion are Christian.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by existed? As in existed in the form as recorded in the bible?

How did you conduct this poll, or is it just some statement you pulled out of your buttocks?
