Hey..
Im kind of new here, but I had a cool idea for a thread and wanted to read some interesting responses regarding people's favorite quotes or sayings..
One of mine was actually something which I read on this forum when someone wrote "when you settle for anything, you always get less than what you settled for"
In Russia we also have this cool saying which goes
"Those who dont take risks dont take champagne" ..I use it frequently in the real world.. |

| "Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?" - Epicurus |

If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.

I love epicurus! one of the wisest greeks :D
this is a really famous theological problem though,
it's called the problem of evil, and is outlined more recently like this:
1: god is kind, omnipresent and omnipotent
2: evil exists
how can these both be?
solved with free will though of course... :)
god cannot of course interfere with human acts, or curb human evils without completely removing our ability to act Good, and have free will (since there can be no good without evil)
- the other good christian response is: God knows what he's doing, so stfu about evil, you don't know nuffin!! |

Or the third option that God may not even exist and good/evil is determined by society, not by some higher power with a magic finger.
Let's not get into religion again though. |

yeah, wasn't offering any solid "evidence", was just expanding on the quote since it's quite a famous 'debate' :)
for more nerdy philosophical info: Epicurus' thing was "pleasure is Lack of pain"... He was somehow misinterpreted in pushing complete self-sufficiency (and essential poverty) by being quoted as a total hedonist, which is why the term epicurean is used to celebrate lust for food and luxury when he in fact would have pushed for the opposite...
got a nice quote to escape my religious defendingness :p
"After coming into contact with a religious man I always feel I must wash my hands. "
