The word "troll" needs to stop

The words "troll" and "trolling" have lost all meaning recently. It has been diluted so far that anything a person disagrees with is labelled trolling. This has become a serious ball-ache to me, for several reasons:
* It has become a mental shield against challenging opinions - trolls are everywhere on the Internet, so any argument or point that makes you feel uncomfortable is a troll post. On TA idiots like Kismet7 and Osterzone label everyone a troll, without any thought or consideration of the content of the posts they are replying to.
* It's an all-too-quick conclusion from people trying hard to be world-weary and unfazed by anything. There are a lot of people on TA who pull this act. Anyone who is ignorant, naive or stupid must be a troll, and rather take them seriously and educate them, people label them trolls and put them out of mind.
* Perhaps worst of all, it becomes a get-out-of-jail-free card for terrible arguments, failed logic, ed up reasoning. Argument slipping away from you? Invested too may posts and too much vitriol to lose face by admitting you were wrong? No worries, just claim you were trolling all along! Nou does this repeatedly, iTranscendence does it, countless others do it. It becomes a form of doublethink. Most people who are engaged in an Internet debate are not interested in whether they're right, they're interested in saving face. If they can walk away from a thread with the smug lie that they've just been winding the other party up they will never actually amend their beliefs and will repeat the cycle over and over.
It's not enough any more to simply "not feed the trolls". Time was a troll was someone like Jay, who posted entirely to get a reaction out of someone. It doesn't just mean "A on the Internet". People who invest any value or importance in the content of their posts - not the desired reaction - are not trolls.
Incidentally, you score absolutely no humour points for either responding with "You're a troll" or by trolling me in this thread. This means you, IGK. |
