Um...just tell them no?
Also what is with these names? Busta Rhymes? WTF?
And doesn't Pete Tong host the essential mix shows on BBC Radio 1? Has he fallen that far to open for deadmau5? |

Unhooked is the name of a new EP/small-album he put out a month or two ago. It's actually like 10 LEGIT techno tracks, dare I say I actually like it! Not going though.. Can't believe it's $70, insanity! |

It didn't last long. If that set ever comes around again, it was between 'Animal Rights' and some dubstep song called 'Raise Your Weapon'. |

I recently found this forum, and I've been lurking for a couple months. I definitely learned a lot from here, especially about production and some new artists, but one thing that struck me as interesting in both this forums and others is just this crazy deadmau5 hate that's sprung up in the edm community.
I do honestly believe that a lot of it is simply due to the fact that he got so popular so fast.
I'm gonna preface this by saying that I'm not some glowstick kid or guido, I'm just a regular guy that loves music. I haven't listened to edm my whole life, I really only got into this music two years ago, but I've always played instruments, written songs, played in bands etc. And now that I've been able to explore edm a little more in depth, I've found that I enjoy tech and tech house the most, i.e dubfire, carlo lio, sebastien leger, richie hawtin, popof, marco carola, claude von stroke sets, victor sets....(btw richie hawtin at ezoo was the greatest thing I've heard in my life). I guess what I'm getting at is I'm not a dumbass deadmau5 fan covered in glowsticks waiting in line at webster hall. But I do have to stick up for him...maybe because he was one of the first artists that got me into edm, so I just have a soft spot.
First off, deadmau5 isn't a spectacular dj. Anyone whose seen any of his unhooked sets (which are basically more like dj sets) knows this. But I do think he's a GREAT producer who has an uncanny ability to bounce around styles while maintaining a signature sound. Wasn't his first huge hit Brazil, which is a progressive house sound? In fact, a lot of his early stuff was some damn good progressive house, and though he does have some poppy electro house stuff people tend to just lump him into some category of cheez electro house producer. the dude isn't justice or someone on ed banger records in 2007. , he even has some techy songs in his discog. He's not a straight electro house producer like benassi or boys noize or something. He's actually pretty versatile, and can bounce around a lot of different styles. The thing is, the only songs of his that get crossover popular (and therefore annoy the out of everyone) are his electro sounding songs. Ghosts n Stuff? please... easily one of his worst songs.
Secondly, at this point in his career his shows aren't dj sets, they're just concerts, and the ticket prices are going to go up until he stops selling out. This is such a simple fact that seems so unrecognized. Why is he being compared to DJs? At this point, he isn't a DJ in terms of his live show. People are paying 65$ to go see him play for 2 hours the same way they pay 80$ to go see Radiohead live. It's a concert, not a set. It's just the way it is, due to how popular he got. It's apples and oranges. He's not playing at clubs, he's playing at large venues designed for concerts.
Thirdly, I do think he's a huge tool. I feel like he looked in the mirror, realized he just didn't look like a DJ, realized he needed a shtick, and used the whole deadmau5 image for gain. He seems to be one of those artists who really only cares about getting popular instead of just expressing himself. He seems hellbent on getting bigger and bigger. Is this douchey? yeah, it's not exactly noble, but who gives a ? It really doesn't affect his music at all. To me, that's the underlying thing about all artists, in any kind of music.
That's the one thing I tend to pick up on...everyone has a strong opinion on deadmau5 because of his image, but nobody seems to just remove everything and listen to his music. I'm not accusing anyone on this forum paticuliarly of this, by the way. I just get the general vibe that everyone has an opinion on deadmau5, and it has nothing to do with his music. , I was lurking on some west coast EDM scene board and there was some psycho bitch talking about how he's ruining EDM and how he needs to be killed and comparing him to hitler and . WTF?!
I don't see how he's ruining EDM. Is it because he's popular? If anything, it'll only make people who really do have the capacity to love the music look into the music further. I know, cause I was there at one point.
Finally, yes, 7 out of ten deadmau5 fans are annoying, don't know anything about EDM, and are just general bandwagoners, and as someone who genuinely enjoys his productions its definitely an annoying truth to come to terms with. But I guess it just goes back to my first paragraph about the music...maybe its just me, but I tend to sepearte an artists image, fanbase, popularity, etc from his music itself. And I do think he's a damn good producer, even though he himself comes off as arrogant and geeky, and his fanbase comes off as a bunch of 19 year old wannabe raver tools.
btw, I don't see how Pete Tong opening up for one of the most popular artists in EDM today (whether or not you want to admit it) is a step down. Maybe in terms of credibility in the eyes of those who just wanna hate anything crossover, but in terms of popularity? No way.
Ah whatever, I said my piece. Let the bashing of deadmau5 continue (and possibly me, unfortunately) |

TranceAddict has an abundance of dense posters who will try to tell you that you're wrong for X reason because you don't appreciate the music they like. They'll make up these ridiculous arguments about how someone "sucks" just because they don't like their music. You have to ignore them. Everything is subjective.

Ghosts N' Stuff is one of my favorite songs from him, but yeah. A lot of his earlier stuff from albums like "Get Scraped" sounds nothing like the music he produces now. He's really one of the most versatile producers out there.
I'd rather have a guy like him at least try to make other kinds of EDM (whether it's good or not) than a guy who just sits there and makes the same-sounding remixes over and over in one genre.

I like what he's doing with the concert thing. I'd rather go to a concert and have a good indication about what someone will play rather than have to guess everything.

It's really about the brand name. I mentioned this earlier in another thread: for a non-EDM audience, too many DJ's are just Euro guys with greased hair standing behind a set of turntables. There's nothing interesting about that. There's no showmanship or stage presence.
With deadmau5 you have the glowing mouse head, the ridiculous video game tattoos, etc. You have a character who also plays music. |
