hey, can't disagree with you there, as all genres du jour will inevitably become diluted by their own "formulas" i suppose you could call it. they become their own cliche in a way.
but don't say that around jamie jones. he went on a long diatribe about his edits on RA a couple weeks back when an RA journalist gave a soul clap "edit" release a mediocre rating-
basically his claim was that they're edits and they explicitly say so on the labeling (and therefore are somehow exempt from negative criticism), and if any of the original artists wanted compensation, they can contact them (hot natured/wolf+lamb/etc) and they will give them all the profits. i found it interesting that he gave the original artists the OPTION to get paid for their own work, instead of doing the right thing and getting the rights/acknowledgement/whatever before releasing it; not to mention that the few digital releases i've bought of said edits include vinyl artwork within the id3 of the file that mentions nothing about the original artist whatsoever.

I ing hate this mentality. If that is indeed Jamie Jones' take on it I just lost most of what respect I had for him.

let me try to find the forum post so you can read the whole thing. that wasn't all.
in a nutshell- we do it for the fans, but we must charge money to cover the overhead, it costs so much because we release it on vinyl, we refuse to release it digitally because we want to "keep vinyl alive" or some whacked out excuse like that.
and yet, many of those edits are released on beatport. and the "keep vinyl alive" argument is such a cop-out, imo.

Most of them if not given away for free are only released on vinyl, which helps keep the dying vinyl market alive, and is never going to harm the original artsist as the money made barley covers the costs. And I know for a fact that Myself Gadi, Soul Clap and anyone involved has always said, if any original artsist wants anything from the release they are welcome to have all of any profits. Every single one says EDIT, which means its not an original production, or even a remix, Nobodys trying to claim this music as theirs.

What a joke, on both accounts. I love how Gadi and Soul Clap got all pissy that RA didn't bow down to their "cult status" and actually gave an honest criticism. I also love how this crew justifies their motives with utterly transparent lies.

Soul Clap, W+L. I've heard them put out mixes that sound like they just threw all their tunes into a jukebox and hit shuffle on more than one occasion. Soul Clap's recent RA podcast, for example.
edit: it's Gadi, I think that's the worst for putting together those kind of terrible, half-assed sounding "mixes". It's insulting when people don't try. And if it's supposed to be ironic, that's ing whack.
Oh, also...Ben Watt seems to be supporting this new wave of "mixtape" bull, where djs just throw together random collections of eccentric and obscure sounding tracks. I can surf Youtube recommendations on my own time, thanks.

I dont mind bad reviews, I never ever ever personally pay any attention to reviews when choosing which music i like/buy, because a review is 1 persons opinion, and i know for a fact that my taste rarely agrees with most.
Also, even if 1 person who hears this edit, likes it goes to find out who the singer is, discovers its jamie foxx, and then maybe buys his album, surely thats a good thing. And i know this does happen, why? because I've done it countless times. E.g, heard a disco house record, (that was called something totally different) found out what the sample was, and then bought the original record.. boom, everyones a winner...
My 1 quipp with the actual review is to say that hot natured is part of a put a kick drum on it posse. If this reviewer can send me 1 track thats anything to do wit hot natured where only a kick has been added, i will stand on the dj booth of dc10 next monday naked eating not only my shorts, but my t-shirt socks shoes and pants too... this i actually found quite spiteful, as its just not true. We always make sure to chop the track up, add beats, most of the time new basslines, new melodies sometimes and so many other parts...anyway, thats my 2 cents..
