no you would need the keys or be able to pick the lock because the method described requires you to be able to reach inside the door to place the rubber band. A thief wouldn't waste the time he either force the door or use a compact bolt cutter.

Nah man the ice will still melt - but not because it is heating up, because the salt lowers the melting point temperature.
