How to take the next leap in quality?

I've reached the point where I am suddenly aware my main lead synth sounds do not have the sheen and cinematic polish that some others are capable of making. Even if I use pro made synth patches - they are not polished sounding.
Anyone want to venture some 'chains' they use to make a sound really polished and in yer face and rounded?
From what I can hear people must be using some sort of quality left and right compressors / and trapping the attack phase and using warmers or other 'placement' devices. |

I want to post a link to a WIP that someone called Xiter has posted on the anjuna production forum but that site keeps seizing up. I therefore cannot ask him (by PM) how he got the synths so polished either.
His sounds are almost suspended in warm jelly....... |

I don't think compressors are always a good choice. Sure, some of them bring some colour or drive, but with wrong settings you totally kill your sounds.
You should try around with different saturation, soft clippers and light distortion. Spatial tools if needed and compression if you are 100% sure about what you doing to the sound. |

I'm going to try my pultec eq emulation followed by fairchild emulation plus mild chorus on 2 duplicated synths with one playing slightly later. The a send to a nice verb and another to a distortion set up.
Then I will make an attack sound - a short muted guitar pluck for example and autopan these.
Maybe my sofsynths aren't the best (cue people saying a bad builder blames his tools).
I have Sylenth, Gladiator 2, DCAM synth squad and GFORCE Iposcar as my main leads. |
