New bylaw limits driveway parking to two vehicles (Toronto) (pg. 4)

I'm pretty sure I know what this is really about.
Some folks innocently decide to invite a few friends over for a late-night shindig. They stick around partying, not wildly and obnoxiously, but perhaps 1 decibel louder than one of the neighbours could handle. Or maybe he was just pissed off that he wasn't invited. Of course, in order to accommodate their guests, the hosts pulled in a little further than usual so that their driveway could accommodate a few extra cars.
Genius NIMBY neighbour says hey, this street (like most residential streets in Toronto) does not allow parking without a city permit past 12 AM. If we could force them to park on the street instead, they'd have to leave early! But how could we possibly get the city to buy into this?
Oh, I know - tell them it's an eyesore - and a zoning issue! If there are so many cars, they must be packing 6 families in there! Clearly these people are up to no good!
As usual, Toronto city councilors whore themselves out for potential votes because they know that the rest of the neighbourhood - like most of Toronto - is completely placid and will take it up the ass like they always do. The only people they really need to worry about are the loud whiners, so just do what they want as long as you can come up with a good cover story.
Yeah, sure, maybe some people really are violating the zoning restrictions, but you could always, you know, actually investigate suspected slumlords as opposed to crafting bull theories about the number of cars.
Toronto, you're a living joke. But you vote for these asshats, so you get what you deserve. |

there are already by-laws to cover that. |
Exactly, the by-law prohibits parking in front of a living space. This is why driveways can't be widened in front of your house as a safety precaution from running into the house. |

what sad reasoning. Therefor roads should not T intersect in front of any buildings and we should put rubber rounded edges on all trees no matter how set back from the road they are.
What a city! |

| It's a standard in all building codes for residential dwellings. It's also why you can't legally convert a garage into a living space. I understand the reasoning for the building codes as I have seen the negative effects of car into house, but this by-law is retarded. |

agreed completely. The more laws we make to protect stupid people from themselves, the dumber we all end up! |

I'm 100% in favour of more oppurtunites to thin the herd. Good ol Natural Selection is being hampered by all the protectionism.
You can't fix stupid! So lets prevent it! |

Which property rights are you referring to. Last I checked, there were none in Charter. |
I'm not. I'm just under the assumption that we live in a country that is at least trying to live up to John Locke's theory of the social contract in the role and extent of the government's power. |

In Canada, you don't have the right to own property. |
