The day i leave my car at home in toronto and take transit is the day that:
-I can get anywhere at anytime in a reasonable amount of time. That means overnights to barrie, to oshawa to hamilton, and downtown at all hours, not just when they think i should be awake.
This means it shouldnt take 3 hours to go from richmond hill to oakville by transit when its 40 mins by car.
This means that it shouldnt cost $25 round trip for said trip over 4 transit jurisdictions to do it when my gas costs me $10 or slightly more right now for said trip.
This will never happen in toronto. (in my lifetime)
Why? because toronto is built in a way that wastes tons of space. Esp north of bloor. Look at the massive pieces of deadspace grass in the right of ways. Look how much deadspace there is in our city. Even downtown isnt that compact. Our GO stations are in the middle of nowhere instead of near where people actually live and can walk to. Our planning is a disaster!
You need density for transit. Period. Without it we are fooling ourselves thinking that bike lanes and busways and streetcars are going to solve our problems.
Toronto needs more transit but we cant fool ourselves into thinking we dont need road capacity. Because short of pressing the plunger button on simcity and starting over, we have no hope even if we started today. It would take at least 40 years of intensive and restructured growth to even think about getting to this point. Until then we still need to get around.
As for transit, at very least, subways encourage intensification once built. Look at Sheppard as an example. |
