whats was the past meaning of producer?
what is the current meaning of producer?
Mad for Brad
the traditional meaning was as I mentioned more akin to the producer of a movie.
The current meaning can mean the traditional meaning all the way to lets say an EDM producer that typically does everything. So both extremes and everything in between. What you should take away is that no matter what sort of producer you are, you are no doubt pretty cool.

its like a project manager. in edm you pretty much can manage everything yourself so you can still call yourself a producer when handling writing/composition, mixing and uhm what else is there really? i guess it was important to have some sort of manager back in the day, with all the responsibility, when the artists where high on heroin and the engineer only where interested in the gear. someone to control the bastards. its like the oil business, some drill, some pump, some separate oil from gass and water and mud, some promote it and someone sells it. on top of that theres someone controlling the chain, making happen. but with edm its more like selling soda from a stand, u pretty much dont need anyone to help you. your beyond help.

I'd rather be called a musician. Calling someone a producer has unfortunate implications - as said above, the producer is like a director. So calling someone a producer implies that they aren't really composing anything, they just oversee the project.

Which, with some people, is the case.

i think more edm artist should stop promoting themselves as a producer and start promoting themselves as a artist..

i think mad for brad..wrote up something interesting on it..in a thread awhile back.

I did

I think it just comes down to people being able to associate with what you are or represent as a brand I suppose. Producer means nothing to most. You will notice that most of the big producers are marketed as artists. Tiesto , Deadmaus …. Those are artist names, not producer names. They have a brand, they have an image and it is something you can market with much ease. I remember seing a track here that had at least 3 different names attached to it. That confuses people. Most don't know the difference between dj and producer thus approaching EDM like a band is really the best way to do it. Bands make albums and tour just like a "producer" makes an album and tours ( djs )

but like some people with names like jonathan Bilman. I mean how the hell do I get excited about that. It is so boring and screams adult contemporary. I recently criticized Richard Butler for his awful producer name. Not only does it sound so boring and normal but you strip any sort of mystery that as an artist, you really want to cultivate.

It could be worse. I once had a singer say "wow, you're a really good beatmaker". She thought it was a compliment. :whip:

being a producer does not involve using hardware, there are producers (and i feel i can name them producers) like Daniel Kandi that only use software and are in the top 100 so... but the word hasn't lost the meaning.

Happens with everything, i play the violin..... i'm violinist. I go swimming once a week but participate in tournaments... i'm a swimmer. People tend to exagerate what they're.

How many people has virtual dj in their desktop? I believe 90% of the people ever downloaded it and played a bit with it, but if they're dj's because of that...

so because of that one time at a house party when I was 21 and went home with a girl that claimed to be 14 but later stated that she is indeed 12 , that makes me a pedophile ? That is somewhat treating a grey area as black and white. Had i known she was not 14, I would of least only gone to 3rd base.
