Love the place, love the sound system.

For me it can get really boring.

someone mentioned mistique music?

they actually release a nice track once in a while, but i suggest that you don't check the follow label option on beatport.

they release an ep every 2 days and are part of the problem when it comes to mp3 labels flooding out tracks by the ton and not practicing any quality control.

there are so many labels like this that make music shopping so freaking long and tedious.

release 2 good eps per month instead of 15 eps a month that no one listened to because they got lost in the sea of mp3 only caca that makes it take 4 hours to buy 4 tracks.

rage rage rage.

there is no label in the world that can release 15 good eps a month, it just does not exist.

They used to release quite a lot less, but yeah I agree there's a lot more sifting to do these days on the Mistique label... but honestly can you really blame them or any label for that matter for pumping out EPs like hotcakes? It is a business afterall, they're getting pretty big and a lot of people I'm sure are buying those mediocre EPs, don't hate the player hate the game.

the most successful labels out there are not releasing music at this pace.;)

they are building a brand based on strong output, good record support, and making releases something that people can't wait for (aka creating hype with the music by having a few big guys hammer it months before the release is out), which in turn leads to track licensing aka the real money maker.

the less is more rule applies...there is a reason that some of these big popular labels have been able to get ahead of the others...it isn't by releasing an ep a day.;)

i would argue that flooding does not lead to profitability. if no one wants the product, no one wants it. there is something to be said about proper promotion, which is vital.

let me put it in another view.

you have a dj that wants to promote himself...
he makes a promo set, is not satisfied with the number of listens so he keeps making more figuring that people will like it eventually.

the thing is that most people hear something once, make their decision and never click on their sets again...there is a reason most successful djs only do a handful of promo mixes a year.

he is better making one set of pure quality...because chances are after listening to one mediocre set, the 9 other ones will go un listened.

you are judged more by flops than with hits in music.

flooding any product tends to be a bad business decision unless the product or service is vital.

supply and demand my friend.;)

you don't create demand by offering an endless supply. simple economics really.

look at the number of releases here:

http://www.discogs.com/label/C%C3%A9cille+Records

this label is not yet 3 years old and has released less music than mistique has in the last month...yet they have become an instantly recognizable brand and have many successful club nights (kaching) across the globe because of this.

this is a great example how you build a label imo.

MSZ should read these two posts. Very wel put. I agree 100%.
Goebbel Goebbel
don't get on his case, he isn't running mistique.

i'm not running a label either, i would not want to, but i know enough people that do it successfully to have heard some interesting insight on this.

You bring up some valid points, but I just think that in the digital age costs to release an EP on beatport are so minimal that it probably makes sense to them.

No one really knows the demand for their music except for them, just because you think a lot of their stuff is crap doesn't mean it's not selling..

Goebbel Goebbel
if they are getting rich at mistique music i will eat one of your turds in front of a room of people.;)

let's take maher from this board as an example...and hopefully he will pop in this thread to correct me if i am wrong.

maher has released music on some really massive labels, ask him if music is enough to pay his bills. It has given him the chance to play a lot out and get booked abroad doing what he loves. he has gotten on digweed compilations and others...but i am sure he has made more money djing.

now lets see:

find me a mistique label night at some of the big clubs in the world.

find me some mistique tracks on some big time compilations

find me some of their talent roster playing out at big time events.

if the label was that successful, you would have no problem finding these...if the label is selling like hot cakes and they don't do this, it is a whole new level of mismanagement by not increasing revenue stream. It doesn't hurt that i know for a fact that all 3 label heads are still working day jobs.

You might think I am basing all of these claims on assumptions, but i am really not. You could also google and look at the infinite bitching done on mistique everywhere on the internet, a release thread on this very own site was deleted because of this very same bitching taking over the thread.

I have nothing personal against the label and i find it cool if anyone can make a buck doing something that they love. My beef is with the over saturation of new releases by mp3 labels causing electronic music to lose value as a whole because of the tracks lacking quality overshadowing and hiding those that do have quality. This watering down of the music market is bad for business, no one buys music anymore enough as it is...making them wade for 5 hours of garbage on beatport is not a good idea.

Beatport is to blame here mostly, they did set a minimum requirement in terms of sales for keeping labels up and functional on the site, but the numbers are so low that it would be hard to not make the quotas unless you do 0 promotion. (i even know a few guys that bought a handful of their own tracks to stay on there)

Record labels used to cost a lot of money to run, and if you put something out 2 times a month you really believed in it because if you didn't you would lose your shirt. The releases cost money to produce and much more effort and thinking (not to mention mastering...which mystique has trouble with) was required to make it.

I don't believe that anyone is capable of believing to this extent in a product that is rushed to the sale point with such quickness and quantity. There is no need to believe, the risks are minimal, you've already broken even if you haven't had to give an advance and are paying the artists pure scale of profit.

I come from a marketing/sales background and am doing pretty well at it. These long posts are not meant to flame at all, and if you answer back up with some substantial claims, facts to get your point across.

It is actually a very interesting discussion, as I know I am not alone when i believe that the over accessibility in terms of releasing a product in electronic music is hurting it more than it is helping it.

and maher, sorry to use you as an example...but you are the most successful name that posts on this section of the board who might be able to elaborate further from the point of view of an artist.

i'm bored and have been buying/collecting electronic music for over 15 years...i have a bit of an idea what i am talking about:p
corjay9
No doubt dude, I'm not disagreeing with you that Mistique releases a lot of crap nowadays, I just assumed they knew what they were doing with a proper business model. I just figured they were expanding because sales were doing well and costs are so low.

Great post, it's cool when you're not trolling all the time :D
