It's like, the beta male type guy sporting skinny jeans with a green Lacoste sweater over a button down shirt, collar showing... has designer eye glasses (possibly without a prescription), hair styled with gel like a hipster, and still shows his urban/street cred at the same time evidenced by a lip piercing and/or neck tatoo peeking out from under that collar. Probably works at Starbucks, Microsoft, or has been working on his dissertation for 4 years now. |
We call those "douches." Not "underground-yet-preppy-yet-alternative." |

I dunno, Microsoft sounds dangerously unhip to me. And I thought the stereotype was that these folks went in for artsy-fartsy stuff, not serious left brain work like programming.

my budget is nowhere near that kind of money. As I said, i want to buy an used 2002 or 2003 Golf, I've been reading and I havent seen any more reliability problems than with any other car that price range (10k or less).
I want to buy it because: I like the styling/interior, I loathe japanese cars (A Civic from that same year would be more expensive here), im just gonna do a short home-work-college-home commute + some going out in the weekends. |

Th exact opposite of whats over here :D No hipsters driving volkswagens, but plenty of middle aged men in work overalls, probably with some bags of cement or potatoes in the trunk. The reason people still buy these is that they can take a lot of abuse before they die, otherwise they will go for something with a bit of soul. |

Had one, piece of garbage. Put together in Mexico. Things broke off of it every couple months and it's expensive to replace them. Consumer Magazine does an annual car review every year. It's often rated quite poorly. It was a great car manufacturer but its gone downhill a bit in the last decade.
Overall, I'm leaning closer to Honda's for overall reliability and service. |
Jus sayin....

The GTI comes in a four door. Plus the new GTI is sexy, the new face is hot.

meh... overrated. I've driven several different types of Volkswagons (minus the CC which I hear is pretty nice).... the Golf, the Jetta, the Touareg, and the Passat, and they ALL feel like they're going to start flying apart when you exceed 65 mph on the highway. I know they're cool rides in the minds of hipsters and people who think they're part of the underground-yet-preppy-yet-alternative socialites (not saying this is you), but I just don't see the appeal. If your budget is $17,000 to $20,000 there's a lot of other choices out there, including some pretty sweet used cars. |
This is easily one of the most ridiculous things I've read from you. You realize that VWs are bred to race, right? Especially the Golfs and special edition Jettas. Time and again VWs have won car of the year (the GTI mk5 winning best compact car).
edit // For the record, not all VWs are built in Mexico. A majority of the special edition / sport models still come from Germany. Any other car you can get in that price range (under 25k) WILL be built in Mexico. Hondas/Acura, Nissan, all those Korean pieces of , American cars etc... |

I'm sure the special editions and modified versions are better. But the run of the mill standard ones John Q. Carbuyer gets from the dealer aren't all that great. I just speak from experience driving some of them.... truly some of the less sturdy cars I've operated. Again I haven't driven the GTI or CC though. |

| Over here in the UK, VWs are known for their reliability because we get the German built models. I've not heard great reports about the ones you guys get from El Banditos, though. |

Indeed I do... but it's on the higher end side with upgraded suspension and put together very well. It's a shockingly smooth ride. |
