bear in mind there were underground scenes the whole time, 80's acidhouse for instance, EDM movements in sanfrancisco..
you have mainstream kraftwerk and JMJ etc.. also but these are classics. bear in mind only about 200 trance tracks from the 90's would likely be deemed classic.
Their approach to melodies is much more complex than most current trance. Back in the day you had several melodic themes or variations upon a main theme throughout the entire track as opposed to now where in 90% of the cases you have 2-3 mins of nothing but kicks, then a breakdown which completely takes away the danceability containing a melody which seemed artificially put there, followed by the same kicks/basslines again. What I mean is, there used to be more shape into songs (I think that's what madforbrad meant in his thread at the producing forum).

EDIT: And what's the point in trying to like something just because everyone talks about it? If you aren't getting a vibe from classic trance just by playing it, it's not like anything we can write down will give you that vibe.

Exactly, it's like watching masterchef when they take classic recipe combinations that have worked together for years, decades, centuries and try to add something silly to it. Sometimes it works but most of the time less is more for a reason.
