What I mean is the kind of stuff you post reminds me of rather extreme genres like breakcore where there's an obsession with a very niche set of musical characteristics, almost always defined by their extremism. It strikes me as niche-for-its-own-sake, a purposeful self-alienation by those who want to self-identify as outsiders.

I'm not sure why you'd think that way. In addition to some acidcore stuff I'd posted - which you may consider "extreme" - I've also posted tracks like Afghan Acid and Give Your Body, both of which are classics in the acid genre, and are hardly extreme in any sense. I'm not sure where you'd find an obsession with particular musical characteristics, as I've posted a variety of acid tracks, quite different in style.

I also think "a purposeful self-alienation..." to identify as an outsider is quite ludicrous. The reason why I like what I do is because I find it tasteful, not because it's "underground" or different from what most people may listen to. To listen to certain music in order to identify as an outsider would be quite childish, don't you think?

Hence why I mentioned teenagers. And I firmly believe there is always a strong degree of identity-formation involved in one's personal tastes, conscious or not. Perhaps I'm totally wrong about why you don't like Acperience, but I certainly think its appeal is in how it finds a nice balance between acid mayhem without going off the deep end into esotericism.

if anything that really bugs me in music it's the "slow it way down"-movement in that greyzone of modern post-hiphop and other various offshoots. the origin or inspiration of this stuff comes from screw & obviously trip-hop but also the experimentation of what hiphop can be from the likes of flylo and ilk.

i cannot for the life of me stand these productions that sounds like they are done to sound pitched down or slowed down just for the of it. it sounds like a third rate modern interpretation of trip-hop and all that jazz. and this is all the rage with blogs, hipsters, musicjournalists & writers that were teenagers in the 90's. and this is played out in clubs. the .




also, one of things that boggled me with this thread is this. i thought the idea was to post the opinion at hand just because it's no point to start an arguement for the of it. obviously, that wasn't the case. but then again i know from my own history as a selfproclaimed knowitall & wit, i would probably be harder on anyone saying "what are you talking about, this is great". i would also probably go straight to ad hominem after the first retort.

Stylistically I don't like everything he's done but his sound design just sounds SO ing good when played loud, incredibly clear, simple and punchy. I think he might have the best technical production in techno when it comes to club tracks. I very rarely pull the 'you'll have to hear it in the club!' card but a Dettmann track only fully makes sense when you've heard it on a system. With most tracks I don't really change my mind after hearing them on a system but with a Dettmann track it's like night and day.

And there's the problem. Clear sign of a ty track if it has to be heard on a 50k+ system to sound good.

Nothing on Resident Advisor that was rated 4.5, album or single, deserved that rating.

Well, I wouldn't say they sound bad played at home, just not as fantastic as on a system.

Out of hundreds of reviews with a 4,5 score, a lot of stone cold classics, absolutely nothing is actually good? Unless you hate everything that RA covers (and even then) that's quite an absurd statement to make. A few years back I went through the RA review archives, focussing mostly on reviews with a 4,5-5 and I found a tremendous amount of great music.
