I was too young when I lived abroad, but everyone I know that comes from a different country tells me that there are no pay-by-weight restaurants elsewhere in the world, and I've never seen one in my trips overseas. Reading an article in the NYT about São Paulo, I was a bit surprised that the reporter actually took the time to describe how pay-by-weight restaurants work:| quote: | | An even better deal – though a bit more complicated to figure out – are the pay by weight buffets, often referred to as “kilo” spots and marked with a sign with “Comida por Kilo” or the borrowed English phrase “Self-Service.” Forget “por favor” or “obrigado,” the key Portuguese word to learn here is “comanda,” either a slip of paper or an electronic card you’re given to keep track of how much you spend; you pay at the end. Grab a plate, fill it with whatever you wish and take it to the scale. Someone will weigh it, mark your comanda, and often take your drink order. |
Is this really a Brazilian thing? :conf: |

I've never seen such a system on any of my travels. Certainly, we do not have such a system here. |

| Ive seen some around here. Not as common, but there are. Is not really that bad, the cafeteria of a supermarket near my office works like that. |

You realize they weigh the food, not the patron, right? |

| I've Heard about the concept, but never been to a restaurant that uses it. |

In the Czech Republic, I did eat at one. I didn't mind the cost because the Canadian dollar had a great exchange rate so it was still cheap.
But here, salad bars (Longo's and other facy-ass grocery stores) are the only way I've seen it by weight here. |
