What kind of investors go in on such a shoddy business plan?
(The kind that want to be comped every night so they can be big shots.)
The interest payments were shocking. Could have gotten a better rate at Money Mart.

some of these quotes are GOLD...

"It felt like an unsinkable ship in the early days. I guess, looking back, it was the Titanic of night clubs." :haha:

I said from day one that Circa was destined to failure...

If Charles can't make that space work, nobody can...

I'm still wondering what happened to all of the cool stuff inside...

Was there an auction???

Great read... thanks for posting. Just like the article said, you could FEEL it when Gatien pulled out of CiRCA. Like it lost it's soul or something.

I was glad to have been a patron there an experienced it--what a fantastic place. It's too bad it couldn't breathe under its own weight. A true loss from an artistic point of view.

..and those sound systems!!

I never stepped foot in the place but the story is quite amazing. A very good read (and warning) to anyone thinking about opening a nightclub.

I've been there like a few times for different events like Tiesto, DJ Dan, hip hop parties, mixed crowd, asian parties, etc. It was always busy when I went, all 3 floors with the Ballroom being a separate party of its own. They were plagued with problems since day one. The delay in opening as stated in the paper, along with requiring more security/people than other places with a liquor license. The city obviously didn't want, and it's unfortunate because it was truly an awesome venue. It was where I played my first gig out of the bedroom.

I had a lot of memorable nights at Circa...Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Tiesto and Demi amongst them...I think the club would have worked in that space in 1999-2002 days when there was no 'war' on clubs in the district..and before there were other options for a clubbing night out in the city.

Lots of people lost money on Circa....you live, you learn... I loved the premise though - at the very least, it was 'different' (even if massively economically unsound - lol)

I loved how Circa attracted such a diverse crowd in its early days...It definitely brought something different to the city which is currently lacking at the moment.
