The master cleanse

| I'm thinking about doing the master cleanse. For those who don't know, you consume only a mixture of lemon juice, water, maple syrup, and cayenne every day for ten days. No solid food. It also includes a laxative tea at night and a sea salt water flush in the morning that really cleans out the pipes. Anyone here tried it? What'd you think? |

| Doesn't it also wipe out all the good bacteria you need in there? You can get cleanses that include a probiotic though, which is probably better. I dunno, I'm on the fence about this stuff - too much conflicting information out there. |

Why would you do this? "Cleansing diets" -- at least when that phrase denotes something other than an ordinary healthful diet providing plenty of nutrients -- are quackery.
The complete lack of essential proteins and fatty acids will lead to some muscle wasting and starvation response. Sound healthy? I guess the catecholamine rush might give you a mild high, though. That is what makes people feel "good" on a traditional fast, after the initial hunger wears off. |

That's where I'm at right now. I've read so many opinions on both the yay and nay sides and there really doesn't seem to be any definitive answer. I hadn't heard that it wipes out the good bacteria, but I'll look into that now.

It's to remove toxins in your system that have been absorbed by any means, as well as any compacted matter in your digestive tract. You're right though, a balanced diet is the target after finishing the cleanse. I did it once for three days and what I learned most was how to distinguish when I eat because I'm actually hungry vs some other reason (boredom, comfort, etc). A friend of mine did the ten day and told me that by the end he was pushing out what looked like orange Jell-o. I'm not gonna lie, I kind of want to see orange Jell-o (or any other weird ) come out of me if it has been sitting in there for months or years :gsmile: |

I tried that right before I did the E2 diet (engine2diet.com), and it was probably the dumbest thing I've ever done. It is completely pointless, you are essentially starving yourself. The human body should not live off bunk ass lemonade with cayenne pepper. It's a stupid ing concept and people who do it are only robbing their body of nutrition.
The laxative is probably the only good part about The Master Cleanse. If you really want to, do it for like one day, and you'll realize that eating the right food is a way better job of "cleansing" yourself. I don't really care to be a vegan again, but when I did it for 5 weeks, my body felt amazing. It's not hard to work more fiber, vitamins and vegetables into your diet to help your body detoxify itself.

Laxatives are good for people with constipation. Not sure where this idea that they are a healthful addition to everyone's diet came from.

| I didn't say you should add them to your diet. But ting out all the grease and disgusting stuff you've been eating is a good feeling for one day. :p |

Uh, I don't think you can survive off that. Definitely going to lose a lot of lot of muscle mass and other important things. |

| An otherwise healthy person can survive without food for a month or more, assuming adequate water intake. Doesn't mean it's good to do. |
