There is this tension between the old ideal of the university as a place for general, liberal "humane arts" education, and the modern notion of it as a factory for turning out highly qualified technical workers. Cultural diversity is part of the modern university's rather ham-fisted attempt to keep the older ideal intact in a more politically correct way.

Oddly enough, it was originally political progressives who championed the modern vision, which they saw as the antidote to old-style "elitist" humanism. But now it seems a lot of conservatives and libertarians take up that call instead, denigrating university liberal arts as nothing but a generator of wordy bafflegab and political agitation, while leftists mostly cast their lot with the professoriat and unify around defending the economically "useless" traditional humanities.

Does the Asian art course cover hentai?

Just a general question.

Nah, but I'm pretty sure there's some shady lolicon going on with stuff like The Tale of Genji. I think the emperor falls in love with a 10 year old or something.

are you telling me your life is more enriched, and you have a more refined understanding of how to form/nurture relationships with people of other races/cultures now that you've taken that class? :stongue:

No. School can't teach you that. But it's not like I hate the fact that I have to take it, some of it can be quite interesting. Plus, what's wrong with learning about other cultures? Not exactly what my major is in, but it certainly isn't hurting me.

Yeah I'm past that part :p

He keeps her around and raises her until she is 15 or so and then bangs her. But then she hates him afterward and he's confused as to why :stongue:

You're the type of guy who acts surprised when the custom Mr. Itou knife, he's gifted a business prospect in Taiwan with, results in a sudden and quiet end to business negotiations.

I think his objection is that it sounds obviously requisite of your degree - which we have established has nothing in particular to do with the class - but is termed to meet some sort of cultural fulfillment. I agree that learning of other cultures is a gratifying and interesting experience, and would certainly do a lot of people a lot of good, but it shouldn't be required by institution for all college students just 'cause. People should want to explore these things on their own, and it's somewhat insulting to your major of choice that they can require you to basically shell out near $1000 for a specific elective just to meet some (likely governmental) sense that reading about other cultures will make people more open-minded, especially when they may very well not want to be.

Does not surprise me at all for high schools, which are largely state-funded of course, but in college that's YOUR ing money. Or maybe it's your parents', and that is why you are so wishy-wash about it. Maybe that's why ALLL you libruls are so wishy-wash about it!!!

He did specify it was a general education requirement.
