Living without mixer... thoughts? (pg. 3)

it's 01v96 v2 - they go for about $1600 - $2200 unless I got something wrong. Scary thing is... I don't even know what "riding the faders" means or advantages of touch mode. Yes, I know... double-face/palm-worthy. I'm embarrassed. But to loosely quote Brian Eno - when Yamaha (lol) techs quipped that majority of DX-7's they worked on still had factory presets in them, he replied something along the lines of "it's not a problem with users - that's an indication of a poor or overly complex design".

that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. now, if say my 01v96 wasn't worth as much as I'm hoping it will fetch - then I will definitely re-consider my view and rather keep it than dump it for so little.

Basically, it just means that once you touch the fader in record mode, its like a "punch in" record and it'll record your fader movements, even overwriting any previously recorded fader automation on that track. Even my little AlphaTrack has that, but you can do it on more than one channel at a time.

Still, I'd go with RANN, use that thing as a control surface. Not worth it to sell it at this point, IMO.

Yeah. Don't get rid of it. You can still use it.

Oh. You mean MIDI automation. Duh. I guess proper term is "riding the faders", then. And I did know about being able to record fader movements via MIDI, I thought it referred to something else - e.g. like "aftertouch" :-) LOL

Well, listed mixer +16ch ADAT card on Friday for $2249 or best offer - just sold for my asking price, less fees.

Best part: bought/sold without any loss - actually, I think I made like $50 on the deal.

I guess I'll have to find out what the mixerless experience will be like.

- well done, i saw one go for less than $1,000 a couple of weeks back....hmmm, seems like xmas is a good time to sell stuff.

I don't think you'll miss it too much, maybe apart from the tactile feeling of actually pushing faders.

I also have a Faderport that I use for Studio One, which isn't supported by the AlphaTrack.

It works partially in Live(MCU) mode - transport, fader, solo/mute, switching tracks works - no lcd, plugin mode though, got a nocturn for that anyway..

I honestly can't tell if this is attempt at humor or trollbait. Besides, what's wrong with GS?

In my experience, too many gear collectors and not enough musicians.

+1, and nearly everyone is an expert armchair pundit on there. I get the feeling it's a lot of guys, with too much time on their hands, reading things about kit and passing it off as own experience. You can kind of tell because most studio engineers and producers just don't have that sort of time to about with it like that, let alone argue it for several pages.

Also, while some of it can be interesting, there's also WAY to many subjective overblown arguments about technical minutiae that makes little to no difference in the real world or to the guys who are arguing so fiercely about it.
