I'm writing a paper and have to reference the word "nigger."
Is it academically appropriate to say "nigger" in a serious college essay, or should I poos out and go with n- word.
My prof is not black and is the only one to read it. You decide!

That *should* be a given. But rather than quote him directly, I'm trying to reference the author's use of the word.
I'm probably just going for it, even if he's just going to scribble "reword" next to it. |

| If you're citing the word, quoting someone else or discussing it, use it. People are so afraid of racist slurs they won't even repeat them in a quote. It does not make you racist to say "The word "nigger" is a racial slur", for example |

I would recommend quoting it directly from the original author. That way it's the words of someone else, not your own.
You can follow it up with something like "his use of this highly charged racial slur demonstrates blah blah" or whatever. You don't have to repeat it, you can just refer to it. |
