Have you guys heard of this? It's pretty ty!
I think this may have happened to me. I have a secondary credit card that I barely use. The number was stolen during the summer and BMO issued me a new credit card. I had the card for about a month, and only used it twice at Tim Horton's using the PayPass. The card never left my hand. Yet later the same day I used it at Tim Horton's the second time, there were $2000 worth of charges in B.C.
I instantly thought that it was someone at BMO that stole my card number because it never left my hand! But now I'm thinking this may have happened!

Some excerpts from the article below. Basically, avoid using swipe payment methods. You're exposing yourself. It's like doing online banking on an unsecured wifi connection, you would never do it.
"It doesn't matter if the cards are kept in a wallet or a purse since they can transmit through them when prompted by a RFID reader, which are for sale on eBay."
"Using free software, he showed what hackers when using a RFID reader on a credit card. The account number and expiration date pop up on the computer screen almost instantaneously after the reader gets within a few inches of the card.
The only credit cards that are vulnerable are those that allow users to tap or pass a reader to pay rather than swiping. Some might also have a symbol on them that indicate they transmit."

| Got to love technology. Thankfully I CIBC haven't started to use these type of credit cards. If and when this does happen. I'm going back to paying with cash. |

I wonder if your bank switches if you are required to have the tap pass. I have a TD Visa, and that's my main credit card. They don't use the tap, and I am very happy with TD.
The Mastercard I just have as a secondary card for emergencies, and also b/c it's an SPC card so I get discounts at some stores if I use it. |

These would be the PayPass cards, which tons of people have including myself. Even Tim Hortons has these PayPass card readers in their drive-thru's. You just tap it, which pays it from your account, and you go. It's no surprise to me that these things can be purchased online easily, there's not much to them. MasterCard is already testing special chips in phones just by taping it lol. |

From my experience the chips are too low frequency to actually work without you actually tapping the object (eg. Paypass). It's magnetic, so it has to be really close to work, especially when the piece is that small inside a card.
As for fraud, I had to change my pin on my BMO debit card 3 times this past summer. I got pretty fed up with it, but apparently it had to do with the gas station i was using it at. Don't go to Sunoco. |

I try and change my debit pin ever week. Sometimes when I use those shady ass debit machines at clubs, when I find my nearest bank I switch the pin. |

Yes. :)
I work for Loss prevention for Td/Ct. It's amazing you do what you do...
Another tip: if you have a higher limit on your debit card but don't use it, LOWER IT. That way if it gets copied they can't take out as much... ;) |
