Doesn't come naturaly at all. I have a random sorta brain which is eccentric and can come up with a handful of lines, but trying to then fit them into a song and pad em out turns out bad.
A tip I heard a songwriter saying he uses; He keeps a note pad with him and if something comes into his head or something in life stikes him and leads instantly to a line, he notes it down. At the end of a couple of weeks he goes back over it all and finds songs that way.
I always think are is often hard and requires a lot of work - think of a stone scupltur, or someone making lace (10 hours per inch square it took to make fine lace 100 years ago - and we think we have it bad!)
I'm very interested in politics and current affairs as well as science, particularly [article and quantum physics as well as all things nature, but I cant seem to get them into a dance track of any kind. I'd like to do one about the sun getting too hot for Earth life to survive, which is 500m years away (4.7bn for the sun to die though) and how people will all have to board gigantic ships to find new worlds, ahhhh
Dave - having read a lot of science lately, I see how you end up with a very precise vocab. |

I bet you'd really like Muse if you don't already. Almost all of their songs are about stuff exactly like this and their Exogenesis symphony is more or less about humans evacuating earth |

In a lot of dance music, I find that the lyrics really have to suit the vocalist, and in the vast majority, singers who can write lyrics have often the best results. I also think keeping it simple is the key.
Rui Da Silva's touch me springs to mind as a vocal that is simple but fits the singer and the track so well.
Maria Naylor, while not simple in terms of songwriting also knows how to pen a track that fits her voice so damn well. In fact a lot of the 90's epic house and trance had a knack for it - Jayne Hanna and Jan Johnson are perfect other examples. |

| I find inspiration in Pink Floyd lyrics. Also, some of the songs by Jim Morrison. Guilty pleasure: some tracks by the killers, mgmt, fischerspooner. |

I thought i couldn't write lyrics, but part of it was because i was just afraid to put myself out there. It's something i cared about so much and so i couldn't accept the potential for failure, and avoided it as a result. Those of you who tried maybe you just needed an initial idea? I couldn't write lyrics or poetry for , and part of it is that initial idea. Once i started playing guitar and singing other peoples music i got a grasp for it. I started adding lines to songs i was playing that were not there and changing lyrics and eventually writing my own songs. I think many computer musicians don't actually play an instrument, and writing lyrics is somewhat similar to writing instrumentals. Almost anyone can do it well enough if they try hard enough, almost anyone can make an emotional melody, if they practice, but then to some extent you are born with certain abillities that may make you better or worse than other but everyone is capable. If you recognize what is good to you, if you keep fiddling with notes something will sound good, and maybe it takes you a long time to do it, but it keeps getting easier.
Writing good lyrics is something you really have to work at, and my guess is most of you probably don't care enough. I did, and so i started playing guitar and singing and playing folk songs and blues and music i though was emotional and well, now i'm almost 18 and i've written a few songs, and it gets easier and easier. Some people are just better with language, and art, but that doesn't mean that only they can write lyrics. |

I've been writing lyrics since I was a teenager. Lately, I've been on a lyric writing tear. I used to think lyrics were a chore, now I kind of enjoy it, and I'm happy once I get my thoughts and concepts into words.
I play guitar, but I think I could write lyrics even if I didn't play an instrument. My advice is, write what you feel, make it poetical, but it doesn't have to rhyme. Dig deep, write what comes, don't even worry if you don't know what it means. That's letting the song write itself. Inspiration is a necessity, and can come from anywhere, just watch for it. I write, then edit later. Sometimes I write a song in 10 minutes, sometimes I will work on a song for weeks, adding a little bit here and there. It all starts with a concept, then I work backwards from that.
Being right brained helps with lyrics, that's for sure. Being a little "off" helps too, but a lot of problems come with that. Troubled, complicated people write some of the best lyrics. I think a left brained person could train themselves to summon up their artistic side. Take a break from all distractions, get alone where it's quiet, take a joyride, look at some nice scenery. Thinking deep is where it's at. |

I'm lit... here's my attempt to spit some :
Galaxy beacons
it's time for goodbye
Dear Gaia, I'm leaving...
it's farewell. Won't cry
Deep oceans
Blue mountains
And deserts
and creeks
You're freezing
World's seizing
Bye sunrise
Ciao! eclipse
We left our legacy
Blast off into sky
Dear Terra, I'm flying
My tears - they ran dry
Barren and frozen
Red dwarf at the dawn
Zemlya ty rodnaya
Proshay milyu dom!*
Deep oceans
Blue mountains
And deserts
and creeks
You're freezing
World's seizing
Bye sunrise
Ciao! eclipse

* Russian:
Earth, my beloved -
Goodbye my dear home |

I'm a pretty good lyricist, but I started writing lyrics before I got into producing EDM.
[EDIT: I found better lyrics to put here]
You may disagree with what this song is about (It's about the Iraq war) but here are the lyrics.
So you say soldiers are fighting for lives,
But sometimes it seems like you're telling me lies,
The government says we need war in iraq,
You can see in his face it's an empty attack.
9/11 Was a tragic event,
But we killed more innocents in our dissent,
We're running and hiding and living in fear,
And everyone's lying and nothing is clear.
Take what you want from this, you know it's true,
Like suffocation, it's turning us blue,
The land of the free, and the home of the brave,
Completely obscene, the way we behave
Reacting with fear, in turn causing more
Their blood and their tears are lying on the floor,
Fight war with war, but nobody wins,
You just collect more blood of innocence.
And all we're doing is fighting an unwinnable war.
Run away from this.
Blood on our fists.
Run away from this.
Blood on our fists.
Tears falling from their eyes, call them uncivilized,
Cause we can't realize, the pain they symbolize,
Muffle their cries and feed media lies,
Keep our image safe in society's eyes.
We act like we're strong but we're nothing but cowards,
Forgotten our cause, emotionless shadows
We no longer know what we're striving towards
Resulting with nothing but bittersweet sorrow
Hold your breath, hold your breath, nobody knows
nobody cares, these are innocent souls
Somebody tell me how we can just go
and tear away their only small shred of hope
I want it to stop, want the fire to cease
Cause I can't sleep conscious of blood on our hands
I wish we could see through our vanity's shield
Why can't we rise beyond government demands
And you can take their lives away
And you can justify your cause
They'll never see the light of day
So we can disguise our flaws
But all we're doing is fighting an unwinnable war.
Run away from this,
Blood on our fists,
Run away from this,
Blood on our fists,
Run away from this,
Blood on our fists,
Run away from this,
Blood on our fists. |
