Writing lyrics

How many of you guys write your own lyrics? I've tried many, many times over the years and have just decided that I suck at it - I get about two lines written and it looks like something Homer Simpson would write. It's probably because my day job is a scientist, so I'm far too left-brained when it comes to writing. I can help other people revise their lyrics, but that's usually just to make them work better with the phrasing of the melody, etc.
So, how do you guys approach it? |

Rhyming comes pretty easy to me
I can't say I'm good, this much you can see
It's all about rhythm
A smithing of words...
And having a dictionary also don't hurt..
The style of prose or of rhyme is the same
Impromtu ideas is the name of the game
Its all about meaning
A hidden one - better!
Like painting with words, simply doodling with letters |

I find it impossible.
Then again I tend to hear the world like Charlie Brown hears teachers.
Words confuse me  |

I am good with language in that vocabulary, spelling, and grammar come very easily to me. But I've never had the talent for conveying emotion in an aesthetically pleasing way through writing. So I suck at poetry.

| I feel that it's something you're born with. It's not exactly easy to practice. |

| Literature is the only other art form that can move me like music does, and when I was younger I wanted to write novels and poems. I still would love to do that. But my attempts at it have proven to me that I have no talent whatsoever for that sort of thing. |

Plus juan... Read "the zen in the art of writing" by Ray Bradburry. Amazing book, highly recommended. |

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you, I'm extremely good with spelling and have a pretty large vocabulary but I can't for the life of me use it to express anything emotional.
That or I can and I just overanalyze it because I wrote it and it sounds stupid to me, I dunno. I hate my singing voice anyway so it doesn't matter a whole lot to me. |

I think most of us here suffer from the same problem in that our writing, however well written it may be, lacks emotion. I know that's certainly the case for me, my English 101 teacher made it quite obvious when critiquing several of my essays that "Your writing is great, very elevated, but I can't feel it. You need more emotion, it all sounds very robotic."
Perhaps, machine music leads to robotic writing and vice versa. |

Yeah, I'm definitely in the same boat as many of you. I think another problem is that I just can't get that emotional attachment to the lyrics that most lyricists seem to have. They can be very sensitive when it comes to any criticism. As I mentioned earlier, I will often help the singers I've worked with revise their lyrics to better fit the phrasing of the melodies - sometimes they'll try to force too many lyrics/syllables into a phrase or stretch words awkwardly over a melody. But, they have a tendency to freak out whenever I would mention that, so I learned early on to approach it very, very subtly and carefully because their initial reaction whenever I mention trying something a little different is like "ahhhggghhh, you hate my lyrics!!!!"
So, maybe you have to be a little neurotic and obsessive when it comes to writing lyrics, but I just can't force that level of attachment to words. |
