Liquor license wasn't even the problem of the night... i dont think it's even necessary as every one still had fun with out it or at least they seem to have been having fun!
few issues for future reference to the club... if you are going to over sell the event, make sure you have "enough" coat check space... that was the saddest part of the night, not being able to check my coat!
second... if its a night club, why do you care who goes on the stands to dance?? if it's a true EDM and not "body english" of mississauaga you'll let every one go on the stand regardless..
On the positive note, even though the event was oversold there was still plenty of dance space everywhere, could have put another 100 ppl and still have space!
Gareth of course rocked and i made up for missing him in May @ Freedom.
The venue is very good compared to some i've been to before and to get better turn out make the bookings on friday/saturday nights...
Not like SVD on Wed. night... when every1 has to work... even thought i know that target audience is the U of W students!

Dear Beta,
Please don't let dudes on the stands to dance.
Sincerely,
The 99.9% of dudes who don't dance on the stands and also would rather watch the DJ or girls, not some guy's ass at eye level. |

Last night was the grand return to clubland for myself and another TA and Gareth Emery did not disappoint! It was our first time seeing him and he dropped alot of solid tracks. Hearing "Empire" totally made my night. Really great interaction with the crowd too. What a fantastic DJ!
I agree with Trancin about Beta's lack of a liquor license not being a huge issue, although my friends and boyfriend said they would have enjoyed it more with a drink in their hand...lol. It was great having lots of dance space and the temp was good too (was that snow coming from the ceiling at a couple points?!). Our only gripes where that coat check took too long and the sound would have been better if they just turned down the volume a bit. Definitely wearing earplugs for the next event. Oh, and the train horn. It was used way to much and was not complimentary to the track the times we heard it. |

Overall I had decent time. I didn't go for music but more for checking out Beta.
I thought it would be interesting to see what Beta looks like, converting an Waterloo landmark theatre into a nightclub. There are a lot of positives to Beta, but overall, I think it's still a work in progress.
First, I freaking love the light and laser system. It's as good as any club in Toronto. The back LED light thing is also cool (kinda like the one on left side of guv main room) but there are gaps like huge lines in the middle which makes it a bit awkward on some of the light patterns. Whoever was working the lights did a good job though.
The decor is simple, yet it doesn't feel empty. Couple of dancing podium in centre, some light things on left side. I'm not a big fan of overly cluttered or overly decorated clubs in general, so I'm ok with the decor at Beta. The right side did look too empty and I thought could use something however.
The staff was overall efficient and friendly. The security didn't seem to hassle anyone without a reason, and willing to listen. The coat check was definitely a fail. Ridiculously long line...
The sound system needs a lot of work. Up at the front, the sound was decent. However, the lack of speakers at back meant the sound was poor in the back and as the night went on and the volume got louder, distortions start to kick in. Deffo need couple of speakers back there to balance out the sound, and won't have to crank the front speakers so loud.
The music was... well, lol. I dunno what the opening DJ likes to play, but I thought more prog/prog trance might be more suitable for a trance opener. And I'm sick of generic sounding tech sound. lol.
Gareth Emery started off with a good opening tune, but played like an hour of cheesy vocals and stuff, so I called it a night around 130. Though it sounded like he picked up the quality later on.
The crowd was very enthusiastic, if a little raw in terms of their EDM knowledge I think. It was pretty impressive to see the club go off couple of times over the sound of the tune being played, and it's not even alcohol fueld vibe. lol. Maybe it's just kids trying out a new thing, but seemed like most people were enjoying themselves.
I think having a club like Beta has a lot of potential for awesome nights, bc I don't think KW had a club this size playing EDM since... well, when Revolution's main room played EDM in early 2000. With some work, I think Beta can make an impact on KW EDM scene, and provide something else than a typical top40 club hopefully.
Thanks Beta for an interesting experience. I will check the club out again for Sander van Doorn :) |

Definitely a major step up for KW. Great atmosphere, great staff and great club. I liked the go go dancers as well. They werent really flaily. Lighting is good but needs a bit more haze for better effect. But overall really well done. As for the DJs, im not the biggest trance fan so gareth was decent. Kurtbradd played well and the crowd was diggin his set so no complaints there either. Does his set match a trance set? maybe or maybe not but the crowd was diggin it so who cares?
Def worth the drive to acton, er i mean waterloo! |

This x100. It didn't seem like Kurtbradd really knew how to open for a trance DJ. He could learn a thing or two from Mark Oliver. I didn't come to a trance event to listen to tech-house. I ing HATE tech-house. I expect the opener to play deep prog/MELODIC proghouse/mau5prog/etc, not amelodic tech-house. BLEH. Even if you think the crowd liked the opener, I'd imagine that the reaction would have been MANY times better had he played a Mark Oliver-style trance opener.
Also, copy-pasting my rant from facebook:
You need some notch filtering for the resonance induced by the squareness of the room. The floor shouldn't be vibrating violently due to standing waves whenever the DJ drops a song in the key of G.
I ing LOVE the dynacords, but the acoustics of that room are just not good enough for you to get away with two huge stacks at the front and nothing else. The only spot where it consistently sounded good was within about 5 meters of the left speaker, and even with my ER20 earplugs, it was too loud at that distance. I spent all night trying to look for a "sweet spot" and there just wasn't one. The bass just rattles everything. Just turning down the bass would have substantially increased the quality of the sound at many locations throughout the room.
But yes... work in progress very much sums it up, and I'm expecting great things. |
